The lights are on
After 12 years at BioWare, and having a hand in numerous projects at the company – from the Mass Effect series to both Star Wars titles – lead writer Drew Karpyshyn has announced he is leaving the company.
Karpyshyn was co-lead writer on Mass Effect 2, and lead writer on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic, and in his blog he states his reason for leaving the company. "I’m leaving to focus more time and energy on my novels and other non-video game related projects," he says. "But even though I’ll no longer be working on games for BioWare, I’m not going to be severing all ties with them. Many of my closest friends still work at the company, and I’m also in the process of writing the next Star Wars: The Old Republic novel, though I can’t say too much about it yet."
Karpyshyn has also written novels for the Star Wars, Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Baldur's Gate universes.
Good luck to Karpyshyn in all his future endeavors.
Email the author Matthew Kato, or follow on Twitter, and Game Informer.
Quitter, He basically saying hes better than you video gaming kids.
In the thumbnail, Drew Karpyshyn looks like he wants to hold me against the wall and have a pound session at my backside.
He won't stop staring. Please make him stop, GI.
Good luck bro
That is sad news. But good luck to him in the future.
What a cool dood, best of luck to him.
This is definitely a bummer but I hope the best for Drew Karpyshyn.
There goes the chances of Dragon Age III being awesome. Damn.
LIES! He quit cause they would tie him down in his office and fondle his bum with Move controllers.
He told me. Himself.
tis sad, but best of luck to him and what he does in the future.
Love his novels, hopefully he gets back to mass effect that way there are no more bad novels.
Is this guy any good? Like sometimes the dialog in mass effect gets pretty poo poo are his novels any good?
Hopefully this wont really dent their writing which does seem to be moderately to great a lot of the time more for me when they did baldurs gate adn stuff some great writing that I am guessing he may have been invovled with.
Best of luck to Drew Karpyshyn. I have always enjoyed his stories in both novel and game form.
No wonder there were so many problem with the Mass Effect book that recently came out.. If he isnt writing them then I wont be reading it.
Drew Karpyshyn is an excellent writer. I wish him the best and hope that Bioware has some good up and coming new writers to replace him. Good luck to Karpyshyn and Bioware in the future.
I've read most of his novels and I have to say that he is very good! It's a shame to see him leave the company but it's also nice that he's going to focus more on things he wants to do. I wish him the best of luck!
Sad that he's leaving, but I;m glad it doesn't seem to be affecting the next Dragon Age game.
As someone who has recently been turned onto Mr. Karpyshyn's novels and also plays BioWare's Star Wars games, I'm both distressed and excited about this news. Of course I hate the fact that he is leaving the company - where does this leave SWTOR, a game that still has writing to be done, as it is an MMO? On the other hand, Mr. Karpyshyn's novels are fantastic, and I'm thrilled at the prospect of such a talented writer focusing even more attention on his writing. I am certainly glad that we have a sci-fi writer of his caliber that has played such a large part in recent Star Wars canon additions fleshing out the history that much more.
