The lights are on
After 12 years at BioWare, and having a hand in numerous projects at the company – from the Mass Effect series to both Star Wars titles – lead writer Drew Karpyshyn has announced he is leaving the company.
Karpyshyn was co-lead writer on Mass Effect 2, and lead writer on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic, and in his blog he states his reason for leaving the company. "I’m leaving to focus more time and energy on my novels and other non-video game related projects," he says. "But even though I’ll no longer be working on games for BioWare, I’m not going to be severing all ties with them. Many of my closest friends still work at the company, and I’m also in the process of writing the next Star Wars: The Old Republic novel, though I can’t say too much about it yet."
Karpyshyn has also written novels for the Star Wars, Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Baldur's Gate universes.
Good luck to Karpyshyn in all his future endeavors.
Email the author Matthew Kato, or follow on Twitter, and Game Informer.
that sucks man. This guy created some awesome video game stories. Either way, I wish him the best of luck, and thank him for some great experiences.
:( ah well, at least he isn't severing all ties with Bioware. Which means he might come back someday to write another game, or even part of the game. Best of luck to you Karpyshyn!
well that sucks good luck to him tho
Quitting an awesome company to write novels? if anyone hears me say that, pleas hit me in the head with a bad!
Well another piece of the once great developer Bioware is gone. The company is becoming more of just a 'name' for EA to throw around.
They should've kept him on to write Dragon Age III, that series needs everything I can muster to be great again.
Maybe he knows ME3 is going to be one of the best trilogy endings ever and he wants to leave on a high note.
Good luck to him in what ever he does next i wish him well,he was a amazing storyteller the mass effect games have the best stories in any videogame ever.
Is this why he didn't write the new Mass Effect book? Well look what happened to it :/
Good luck Drew.
Sounds like a bad idea. Honestly, how many times do you here people doing this in this industry and it doesn't pan out at all? Where he was at was a paycheck for sure.
Good luck I guess.
That's sad for Bioware. He's a wonderful writer. I'm glad he's following his heart and moving on to what he wants to focus on.
boooooooo
I wish him well in his career but I do hate that he's leaving. That totally suckx.
As a huge Karpyshyn/Bioware fan, I'm really shocked and somewhat saddened by this news. His work on the Mass Effect games have truly been an inspiration for me (although it's hard to pinpoint what stuff was his and what wasn't) and my own writing endeavors (regardless of how far removed they are from Heavy Sci-Fi). The Mass Effect series could pull off conflict, weather it be on the battlefield or in the living room (intergalactic living room), like few other games out there.
Long story short, I wish him well, and hope that he continues to kick butt in the name of awesome writing.
Bioware is apparently losing a great talent then. I'd love to see him continue for whatever future Mass Effect games are released once Shep's story is done.
Good luck Karpyshyn. You've made a lot of memories with the stories you've created.
Oh no I love dress work its incredible as well as his books
"Focus more time and energy on my novels," eh? Maybe he'll focus and write something that isn't crappy, licensed fanfiction.
