Notch Explains Psychonauts 2 Offer, Asks Internet To Calm Down

by Phil Kollar on Feb 15, 2012 at 02:15 PM

Ever since Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson offered to help Tim Schafer fund Psychonauts 2 via Twitter, fans of the cult classic have been giddy with anticipation at  renewed prospects of this sequel. Now Notch is trying to make his point of view on the potential project clear and calm people down.

In a post on his Tumblr, Notch called his original tweet to Schafer "semi-joking" and then explained the situation as it stands right now. Notch says he and Shafer haven't talked much but hope to meet up at the Game Developers Conference in March. Notch admits that the budget for doing a Psychonauts sequel is "three times higher than my initial impression" but also says that a few other parties have expressed interest in investing. He clarifies that it would not be done "as a charity," and that he expects the game would be profitable.

Notch also says that Double Fine's recent Kickstarter success story could affect the fate of Psychonauts 2, but he remains interested in being involved:

"All I know is that IF the numbers work out and IF they still want to do it and IF they don’t decide to self fund a sequel by doing more crowd funding (which is honestly what I would’ve done if I were them), I would be most interested in doing this type of investment."

Notch ends his post by begging fans to be reasonable, saying he is "incredibly scared of the very real risk of people feeling let down just because I took a chance at something that doesn’t end up panning out." For what it's worth, I appreciate Notch's openness and passion about this project whether or not it makes it into reality.
