Square Enix Reveals Sleeping Dogs In Live-Action Trailer

Square Enix registered the trademark for Sleeping Dogs a few weeks back, leading some to speculate that it might be a new entry in the Kane & Lynch franchise. The publisher squashed those rumors today with a live-action trailer for the game. If the game's undercover cop in the Hong Kong underworld conceit sounds familiar, it could be because the game was once known as True Crime: Hong Kong.

“Working on Sleeping Dogs has been such a huge passion for the team at United Front Games, and we’re really pleased to be working with Square Enix London Studios,” said Stephen Van Der Mescht, executive producer at United Front Games. “The extensive experience that both studios have in creating compelling open world gameplay and rich, rewarding combat makes for a perfect partnership. Working together we’re ensuring Sleeping Dogs is the most intense and immersive game it can be.”

“From the moment you pick up the controller and experience the blend of driving, close combat, and shooting you know you’re playing something fresh and a bit special,” says Lee Singleton, general manager of Square Enix London Studios. “Sleeping Dogs has one of the best melee combat systems out there – it’s super brutal with devastating takedown moves, and when added to UFG’s proven heritage in driving games, a first class story, and the vibrant backdrop of the Hong Kong underworld, we get a fiery recipe with fun written all over it.”

The trailer below shows absolutely no gameplay footage, which is a bit disappointing. The game's been in development for several years now, after all. Take a look at our last preview on the game, when it was still known by its True Crime name, for more details.

  • hmmmmm they should make a game based on the movie that the departed is based off of
  • *** the game! they should make a movie. that trailer was *** awesome!
  • I used to be pretty excited about True Crime. Sounds like this could still be cool.

  • "you know you’re playing something fresh and a bit special"... that used to be the sequel to another franchise.

Also, I wish I could believe the gameplay will be as awesome as that trailer
  • wow when i heard of true crime:hong kong i thought it would just grand theft auto except you are the police but if the game is anything like the trailer its gonna be alot better

  • Pretty cool trailer, the quality of the special effects and the caliber of the fight scenes tells me it obviously had a pretty high budget.

If the game can pull off the same feel, with gunplay, hand to hand fighting, and driving being integrated seamlessly together without feeling like a bunch of set-pieces, than I'm sold.

  • That actually looks like a pretty pimp movie trailer.

    I'm fairly interested now.

  • It's so great!

    ...we just can't show you.

"we get a fiery recipe with fun written all over it.”

-Call now and we'll throw in a free Moogle!

  • Seriously though, why use a medium that doesn't show any of the hard work you've put into it, only that you have some big bucks behind it? Money doesn't make the best games, it's been proven time and again. If they can actually pull off the seamless integration of driving, shooting, and fighting, then this game will be pretty good.
  • Can they just make a movie, please?  I would totally watch two hours of this.

  • Being born in Hong Kong, I cannot wait to get this game!

Definitely a day one purchase for me! Hopefully there'll be a day one PC release! I'm not too fond of playing these games with a controller!

Let's see how UFG will portray the Chinese in Hong Kong. Hopefully nothing like the clowns in The Departed =\

  • Definitely a creative and interesting trailer. Hope to hear good things about it.

  • That trailer is freaking awesome!

  • Seems interesting, I remember loving True Crime back in the day.

  • Attention Square Enix!

    MOVIE!

    That is all.

  • and that's why I don't go to fancy restaurants no more...I end up beating up everyone and burning the chef alive...

  • I was a fan of True Crime: NYC way back when, and that trailer definitely has me excited for TC: Hong Kong, or rather Sleeping Dogs.

    Reminded me of Old Boy.
  • Live actions good and all but movies get trailers and games get demos, show us gameplay or i am not interested.

  • Awesome trailer! This would work great as a movie. I'm excited to see how this game develops.

  • I am excited. I can see all of the things in the trailer convert to gameplay. I hope Sleeping Dogs has a big presence at E3. Can't wait to see more.
