Bizarre Resident Evil Gameboy Color ROMs Now Available

I still remember reading previews for a Gameboy Color version of Resident Evil as a boy. Having merely watched the harrowing survival game on my cousin's PlayStation (I had an N64), I desperately wanted to get my hands on the game. The GBC version was my best chance at the time, but it was sadly canceled due to its lackluster quality. Now, 15 years later, we finally have the chance to see just how odd and strangely impressive this handheld version was.

The two versions of the canned game have been in the custody of a mysterious collector, who stated they would leak the game to the public if $2,000 were raised. Now that the person has been paid, the game can be played. Head over to Assembler Games forums to get your grubby mitts on the unfinished product.

Some say it can be completed, some say it can't. Overall, it's supposed to be about 90% finished. Having tinkered around with it a bit, I have to say that this is strikingly similar to the 1996 survival horror title. The mansion layout is identical, item/enemy placement is pretty close, and the text dialogue is the same. The biggest difference I've noticed is also the creepiest -- zombies simply fall to their knees when they're incapacitated. The site of an immobile corpse resting on its haunches is unsettling, even when terribly pixelated.

What are you waiting for? Go explore a piece of Resident Evil history! Unless you're playing Resident Evil: Revelations. In that case, beat that game, then check it out.

  • I love me some game boy color =D
  • Hah, Tim Turi, you woulda had a N64 and not a PS1, chump.

Nah just kidding, I just remember at that time/age the PS' more 'edgy' and violent games had a certain cachet for 'tweens' that N64 couldn't match by merely having some of the best iterations of Ninty games ever. N64 took things to new heights, but PS was mysterious and cool and an unknown quantity.
  • Wow never even knew about it.

  • I keep expecting to see Larry Laffer in some of those screen shots.

  • Unless you're played Resident Evil: Revelations. Fix that noise, Tim!

  • Whoa, this is cool. Be cooler if this happened with other games like like spyro or crash, but not likely.

  • I just finished playing REvelations for a good hour and a half, I'm loving it. :) I'll take a look at this after I beat REvelations.
  • There was a GBC Resi game. Resident Evil Gaiden

  • Heck yea im getting this!!!

  • Wow, maybe it's just my older eyes. I think I would have a hard time playing this game today. Maybe that's why it was never finished?
  • Graphics sure have come a long way.

  • wow i would have never known of this! thanks Tim!

  • I remember seeing previews for this in whatever video game magazine I was subscribed to at the time. The concept of a portable version of one of my favorite games was very exciting. I was bummed when it never came to fruition. Little did I know; Internet. It always finds a way, and I am thankful.

  • Since im not getting my copy of Revelations until this weekend, i'll check this out now.

  • This is hilarious,I'm definitely gonna try this out. Operation Raccoon City is pretty close though.

  • Wow, just looking at that screenshot,  it's pretty neat how they managed to pull of a visual feat such as that, on the Gameboy Colo

  • This is just wrong. This isn't what GBC was meant to do. While sort of admirable, forcing Resident Evil's game design onto this hardware is just wrong and unfun. Not worth it. I would, however, be interested in seeing the GBA version of Resident Evil 2 running on that ...Blue Roses engine? The one that actually still had polygonal models against the pre-rendered backdrops? The way Resident Evil (pre RE4) was supposed to be? THAT was impressive, and that's how it's supposed to work.
  • it's amazing how far they tried to push those pixels

  • i feel like i need to throw money at someone before downloading this so i don't feel like a pirate.
  • I remember reading about this in 2000.  At the time, I thought the graphics were amazing.  This looks worse than the Alone in the Dark game that came out for GBC.  Remember that?  It was a similar idea, and had no business trying to run on the GBC's limited power.
