Replay – Bubsy 3D

When the gaming world turned its eye to 3D in the 32/64-bit era, some franchises made the leap gracefully. Mario and Link knocked the ball out of the park with their three-dimensional debuts, Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time. Bubsy did not make that same leap. While he was certainly no Mario or Link to begin with, this wretched platformer ensured that the snarky bobcat would become a gaming footnote at best.

Bubsy 3D was a notoriously awful title when it released in 1996, and we expected the worst when we decided to revisit it 16 years later. You can watch Tim Turi, Andrew Reiner, Ben Reeves, and myself struggle with the title below, and be sure to stay tuned for the second segment.

  • YES!!! NOW POST SOME "DAN AND HIS DAD"!!!
... Those vids were great, and because my PS3 has Yellow Light Of Death, I'm forced to watch others play games, instead.
  • Oh, not Bubsy 3D. lol

  • hoping for another gi in the future replay segment. the last one was hilarious
  • Is he holding a gun in the first picture?
  • Loved REport
  • i want to punch hugo in the face

  • Bubsy looks abysmal. Also, I love the idea for Reported. Good stuff as always guys.

  • hahaha reported is a great idea...Hugo was amazing!!!!!!

  • I've always heard about this one but I've never played it. Watching now...

  • Can't wait to see this weeks gimmick.

  • That reported segment was hilarious. Still think you guys should go back to calling it roulette and just have some of those games as options. Please, just no repeats of the last episode.
  • You guys should have done Mountain as well :( It was the last stage you had to check out.

  • I liked reported much better than the second segment last week!

  • 2 crappy games = Win! Reported is so much better than Future Replay, no offense!

  • Wow, that Bubsy 3D game was atrocious. I do like the idea of looking at games that never made it to the U.S., and I can't wait to see the segment's return in future episodes.

Looking at that Hugo game reminded me of a game that would have been released for the CDi players.

  • Now that's what I call an explosion!

  • I remember watching Hugo on tv as a kid here in Denmark.. The tv-version you're playing, is the part that viewers could control from home with the buttons on their phone, when calling the show.. "Trolde-rit, trolde-rat, trolde-rut, nu er spillet ***"
  • You found a notoriously bad game!  You win!

I don't even know what to say about the second game.  Good idea for a new segment though.

  • Hugo! Funny that you should find this game, i remember it fondly from my childhood in the early nineties. The majority of the Hugo games consisted of short "mini-game" type levels (like the ones you played during this episode), and were developed by the Danish developer ITE Media. Some of them were featured in short segments on weekend primetime television on the channel TV2, where contestants could call in via telephone and play the game with the buttons on their phone - the number 2 could be up, 4 left, 6 right and 8 down, corresponding the arrow keys on a keyboard. This is also the reason why the game has the tv-version mode you see in the opening menu. The lag and general instability of contestants playing via telephone meant that it could often be unresponsive and hard to play properly. Nevertheless, every now and then the contestants managed to overcome the initial level (which was picked at random) and moved on to the finale, where Hugo would be able to choose one of three or four different options that could either reward him, or "kill" him in some way. Contestants would earn real life money for picking up the sacks of gold during these levels, so there was a very good incentive to go for these. Same goes for the finale level, where picking the right option would yield a substantial money reward or other prizes. The game and the tv-gameshow format has apparently been adapted to a lot of other countries all over the world. There are several clips of the Hugo contests available on YouTube, this one is from the Danish show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeZ_PKS4PLU&feature=related
