Xbox 360 The Best-Selling Console In 2011

The Xbox 360 was the best-selling gaming console in 2011, according to data compiled in a new report.

According to GeekWire.com, which collected data from public earnings reports, says Microsoft sold more Xbox 360 consoles than the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 for the calendar year. This marks the first time the Xbox 360 lead console hardware sales for the year since 2006 when the PS3 and Wii first launched.

In 2011, Microsoft sold 14.9 million units compared with 14.1 million for the PS3 and 10.33 million for the Wii. For the holiday quarter, Microsoft took the lead with 8.2 million consoles sold where Sony sold 6.5 million PS3s and Nintendo with 5.6 million Wiis during the same period.

Life-to-date, Nintendo Wii still leads everyone with 95 million Wiis sold compared with 66 million Xbox 360s for Microsoft and 62 million PS3s for Sony.

  • The XBOX isn't bad, but I'll take my PS3 any day of the week. I like how the controller is symmetrical, and the analog sticks aren't recessed, which hurts my thumbs a little in certain games. The online service is free, the online population seems to be more mature (I've run into maybe 30 children in 6 years of CoD), and when developers know what they are doing, the games are much better. The inclusion of a Blu-Ray drive is just a very nice bonus. Although the PS3 has a heating problem just like the 360, the XBOX seems to overheat much more often. Thousands of people have to trade in their 360 or buy a new one every year, so I'm willing to bet that the PS3 has technically sold more if you don't count replacements. I only had 1 PS3 overheat, and that's because I played it for 18 hours straight until the power went off during hurricane Ike. Heat couldn't escape so it was understandable how it failed. Everyone I know with 360s have told me they die even under normal conditions of 2-3 hours!

  • RROD are one reason why it's in the top spot.
  • They took the lead in the second and third quarter of 2010 as well, according to that chart. I will give credit where credit is due. Microsoft have really understood that the console war is won with software, not hardware. That is exactly why they are where they are. That is also why Nintendo lost so much ground. If Nintendo had better and broader third party support they would still be on top. That was formula for success with the SNES. Does anyone remember the s#@! ton of games that were on that system? I rest my case.
  • Let's not forget how many xbox's were sold because of the rrod. And I would also like to see the age bracket of the people that bought xbox's.I think the xbox is a great system, but too many little kids play it,and end up crying over stupid stuff when they get beat are something happens they don't like. Ps3 does have the better games hands down, and while they may not have sold like hot cakes doesn't mean they weren't worth the purchase. Microsoft built a great gaming system, but if you look at it a little more closely, everything you may want to do on it will cost you in some form.Yes,It has great on-line play but at a cost.Sony doesn't care about breaking us,they just want us to play and that is why it's free. If sony decides to start charging us for on-line then so be it,I'm pretty sure they'll make it worth every penny. I believe the next xbox will come out before the next ps,but does that really make it a good thing for microsoft are sony?Yes,microsoft will have a head start, but that only means their's still life in the ps3 to play with, and also it will give sony something to try to compete with if try to be better then. And also, xbox has been hacked before, look it up.
  • there are 95 million paper weights/door stops out there. WOW! i wonder how many of those are the Limited Dust Collectors Edition Wiis

  • I noticed Sony tends to sell more than Microsoft during the slumps, but Microsoft outsells Sony during the holidays. Interesting report. Love both consoles!
  • Hey Nintendo, what happened? It's almost like you had nothing to offer people this year. It also seems that Sony and Microsoft have extremely similar sales. They seem to have a back and forth of who's on top between the two.

  • good job microsoft. If you ever lose to Playstation ever again. Bad things will happen. Jk lol good job

  • Glad to see the Xbox 360 doing well!

  • TurboGrafx for life, son!

  • Interesting data. The Wii looks like it outsold the PS3 and Xbox 360 overalll, and the PS3 was only slightly behind Microsoft overall. As of right now though, Xbox 360 certainly has taken the lead.

  • The Nintendo Wii had so many high points!!!

  • Apparently the PlayStation Network debacle convinced a lot of people that were about to get new consoles to not get PS3's. To be honest, the God of War series is the only reason I ever even started to consider getting a PS3, but then they started off at $699 and Kratos just isn't worth that much.

  • i'm not too too surprised by these numbers. the wii is pretty much in a category all by itself. and with the ps3 hacking thing, it makes sense that the 360 is on top. not by a huge margin, but on top all the same.

  • the only reason xbox 60 sold more is because everyones xbox 360 keeps breaking them forcing them to buy a new one because they already paid for xbox live for year... and then when the slims came out they all traded or bought new slims because they were all afraid of the system crashing but ps3 still sold more without huge numbers of crashing systems... and ps3 does it all without forcing you to pay to play games online... come on you already fork out 60 for the games isnt that enough then you have to pay extra to go online and hang out with friends... ps3 you pay 60 for games that go online free....
  • damn the wii

  • Wii Did Good?
  • Now the only reason the XBox360 has had so many sales is because people have to go out and buy a new one when theirs crash.

  • the wii sucks. wish i didn't have that p.o.s. all i ever play is box.
