Xbox 360 The Best-Selling Console In 2011

The Xbox 360 was the best-selling gaming console in 2011, according to data compiled in a new report.

According to GeekWire.com, which collected data from public earnings reports, says Microsoft sold more Xbox 360 consoles than the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 for the calendar year. This marks the first time the Xbox 360 lead console hardware sales for the year since 2006 when the PS3 and Wii first launched.

In 2011, Microsoft sold 14.9 million units compared with 14.1 million for the PS3 and 10.33 million for the Wii. For the holiday quarter, Microsoft took the lead with 8.2 million consoles sold where Sony sold 6.5 million PS3s and Nintendo with 5.6 million Wiis during the same period.

Life-to-date, Nintendo Wii still leads everyone with 95 million Wiis sold compared with 66 million Xbox 360s for Microsoft and 62 million PS3s for Sony.

  • I knew the wii sold a lot but this puts it in perspective. WOW
  • Do you hear that? It's the march of fanbois getting ready for battle.

    On a related note...

I would never get an XBOX because they don't have a single game I'm interested in, but it's good to see they are doing well. Hopefully this will give them incentive to keep trying new things.

You hear that Sony? Get your shi- stuff together! Nintendo... I'll just leave it at that.
  • Yay go Microsoft! Don't let my investment be for nothing!
  • its all about PS3 son!
  • I cant help but feel the 360 sells were only helped everytime mine took a *** right after the warranty ran out and i needed bigger hardrive spacee.
  • Anyone else see how the wii has always been top during the spikes? That means the end probably does the same.
  • Its funny how sale go up and down periodically, shows the longevity of todays consoles LMAO...
  • Can't wait for the next xbox, tired of borrowing the 360 from my sister.=(
  • When the PS3 and Xbox 360 came out i had to make a choice. Halo or Ratchet & Clank? I chose Halo, and i don't regret it. While the PS3 absolutely holds much better exclusive games, the Xbox has superior online functionality (although its not free). Plus most of my friends have 360's as well so once again it added to the online superiority. Im not bashing PS3 at all, and if i had enough money i would get both, but thats life.
  • Pshaw. I'm still betting the Dreamcast will make a comeback.
  • because nobody wants to buy the crap wii and ps3 anymore.
  • No surprise to me. I'm ready for the next XBOX.

  • I had looked up the sales on vgchartz a few week ago, so this isn't surprising. 2011 was really a wasted year for Sony. So many exclusives with many of them not selling well, and the console didn't beat out the 360 in sales. Hopefully this year will go better for them.
  • I prefer my Xbox over my PS3 for cross console games, so I'm glad to hear the Xbox is selling well. Unless the PS4 does something amazing I'll be getting the new Xbox first.

  • The lamest console sells the best......stupid old people.
  • wait a minute, with rrod, doesn't that mean more people own ps3 than 360? Or does that final figure, whether it relates to all working units or not, still rule all?
  • Holy crap, the Wii has sold a lot, but now it is taking a beating. Also, I love my Xbox but the reason I feel it's most sold is just the price point.
  • It's just a shame that numbers don't speak to customer service... and in fact they so often seem to be inversely related.

  • Being the best selling in 2011 hardly means anything if the higher selling console beat you by about 30 million units with one less year to do it. Also I wonder if the Wii will reach 100 million units sold? I think it will, but that depends on whether or not Xenoblade (and anything else I'm unaware of) can push enough units. And what caused the Wii's "units sold" to increase between Q1 and Q2 or 2008? None of the other consoles did that, and the Wii only did it there...
  • Bravo!
