Crytek Is Backing A New Social Gaming Network Called GFACE

Crytek, the development studio behind Crysis, is backing a new social network with a weird name called GFACE.

I assume that the name has been chosen so that people will hear the words "face" and "social network" in the same sentence, get excited about Facebook, and then by the time they realize what they've signed up for it will be too late. People probably won't be too upset though, because GFACE sounds pretty interesting.

It's a online social network that looks like it has taken some inspiration from Google Plus and Facebook, but it also looks like it will have a robust set of online gaming tools. The site shows examples like clicking and dragging people from your friends list into your games for multiplayer, built in video chat, and probably most interesting, cross-platform gaming supporting, as an example, one player on a smartphone, one on a PC, and one on a tablet. In that instance, each player would be performing a different job customized to their device.

It's unclear if GFACE will support non-browser based games, but with Crytek on board, a company that likes to put its games on discs, it seems like it could be possible.

You can check out GFACE and sign up for the beta by clicking here.

  • Wait, so GFACE is only for browser-based games? Sucks, 'cause that was sounding like a really cool alternative to Steam/Xbox LIVE/PSN. If Crytek ever starts to push it out to support disc-based, I'd be pretty cool with trying it out.

But I'm guessing it's not like a full digital client in the same vein as Steam, soo.... I dunno :P

  • Ned... Ryerson. "Needlenose Ned"? "Ned the Head"? C'mon, buddy. Case Western High. Ned Ryerson: I did the whistling belly-button trick at the high school talent show? Bing! Ned Ryerson: got the shingles real bad senior year, almost didn't graduate? Bing, again. Ned Ryerson: I dated your sister Mary Pat a couple times until you told me not to anymore? Well?
  • Girlll let me see dat GFACE
  • GFace sounds like something a fourth grader would use as an insult.
  • ugh. nerds playing games with friends? whatever happened to playing games alone in your room? It's a sign of the imminent apocalypse, I'm sure.
  • Is it only me, or they have the ninja in logo?

  • I think they should change that name ASAP.
  • Lots of social networking sites for games coming out these days...Anyway may as well apply and see what it's all about. Though that clicking and dragging sounds kind of interesting if they are some pretty good browser based games I suppose.
  • Good idea, but as i always say with something like this, will they do it right, and if they do are there enough people to keep it going?

  • Put your "GameFace" on?

It's the only logical reason for the name I could think of. idk
  • Looks interesting.  That's about all I can say.  Don't know if I'll have the time to test it out.

  • Is this anything like the "O-face" from office space?

    O..O...O

  • I always thought of Crytek as a developer and with how much money they have lost recently, I'm surprised they would support something like this.

  • interesting idea...too bad my computer is a complete POS or i'd try it. i so need to get my gaming rig build...stupid finacial situation
  • Interesting that it currently only works with Chrome and Firefox.  I have no issues with IE, and find it just as quick as the others.  I don't know if I really see GFACE taking off.  It might though.

  • If anyone can pull this off and make it popular, I think it'll be Crytek.

  • Cool, might have to try this out.

  • I've already signed up for the closed Beta.

  • Some of the stuff on their website sounds pretty effing legit, I must say. I can't wait for the beta

  • Sounds pretty cool.
