SSX's Online Pass Doesn't Sound Too Bad

In an age where online passes lock out online multiplayer and single-player content, EA Sports' upcoming snowboard title SSX does something different.

According to an EA spokesperson, SSX will allow you to play and compete in both online game modes, Explore and Global Events without a pass. However, any credits you earn in Global Events will not be awarded to players without an Online Pass. The credits will be stored, meaning that you can use the Online Pass whenever you choose to have them awarded. These credits can be used for a variety of things, including purchasing additional gear for your character and participating in event drops across both Explore and Global Events.

SSX will be out on February 28. Below is EA's statement on SSX's online pass sent to Game Informer:

As you know, all EA Sports games for the Xbox 360 and PS3 have included a game-specific EA Sports Online Pass since June 2010. This is a one-time use registration code with each unit sold new at retail that allows access to online services and features, as well as bonus game content.  Once activated, additional passes will be available for $10. Thus, all new copies of SSX will include a code for Online Pass. EA Sports has made a significant investment to offer immersive online services and features.  We want to reserve these online services for people who pay EA to access them.

In SSX, players without an Online Pass are able to compete and play in both of SSX's online game modes, Explore and Global Events with no restrictions. In Global Events, the top finishers from each event are awarded with in-game credits. These in-game credits earned during play will not be awarded to the player if they do not have an Online Pass; these credits will be stored so that at any time, if a player redeems an Online Pass code, all the credits that they had previously earned in Global Events will be immediately awarded to them.

Economy balance makes it possible to unlock all available content and allows you to participate in all event drops across both Explore and Global Events, with credits earned solely in Explore.

  • I would have to agree, that online pass isn't so bad.
  • Not bad at all. In fact, I would be all in favor of online passes going this route all the way. Not completely excluding you from playing half the game, but restricting /some/ content.
  • EA isn't so bad after all...but that's still seconds of my life I won't get back when I input the code
  • Online passes don't bother me. I fully understand companies wanting to encourage the sale of new games over used. Of course developers want their games to be well received by critics and customers alike, but in the end it's all about profit. Too many companies going under the past couple of years.

  • Prefer this to locking out single player content

  • That's interesting. Wonder what people will find to complain about it. I don't really have a problem with Online Passes anyway, but I would think this is a preferred approach?
  • Huh.

That's a pretty sweet online pass.  Pay $10 to get all the points you've earned right off the bat.  Doesn't hurt the used-game buyer at all.

  • Sounds swell. I should think about buying this.
  • smart

  • Yeah, I'm not a fan of online passes, but honestly, that seems pretty fair to me.
  • Not bad at all...

  • more online passes should do this!

  • Mod
What's the point of the pass in the first place then? Seems like they just wanted one in there for the fun of it. Still buying the game day one because I'm so hype but I'm getting sick of online passes.
  • That's a fantastic idea for an online pass! It's locking out content while still giving you your money's worth. That's pretty brilliant, well done EA.
  • At least this isn't locking out single player content unlike some other game... (*COUGHS*Kingdoms of Amalur*COUGHS*)
  • this is exactly why i have been boycotting them since 1999...i dont buy ea and dont care for their games..i only make exception when it is a game not made by them but published by them such as Mass effect and now kingdo of amalur...this is a company that dont innovate on nothng but is so greedy
  • lower the prices of games and people wont be buying so much of used games..new games should be btwn 39 to 45$ max
  • I like the way this online pass is set up. I can still play and save points and can redeemed them whenever i want. I still dont see the online passes are good because companies are going under. Most of the ones shutting down games suck plain and simple. Its hurts to hear ya game is bad but if you never know you will never make it better.

  • Anyone who will buy this online pass because it doesn't block the full online experience, but is against others is a hypocrite. Yes it is different because you can use the online features, but if you are willing to spend $10 on this one because they were nice not to bock online completely, you should be willing to spend $10 on any others.
  • People need to chill out about freaking out over online passes just buy the game new and you wont have to complain
