Microsoft Attempting To Acquire Domain Name Of Fake Halo 4 Beta Site

The Halo 4 publisher recently filed a complaint to the National Arbitration Forum to acquire the domain Halo4beta.net, which had been posing as a Halo 4 Beta registration site.

343 Industries David Ellis had already warned fans via his Twitter account that the site was fake. In response the domain was taken down by its owner -- and still comes up as "suspended" today. However, Microsoft's new filing -- if successful -- would give the company ownership of the domain. Microsoft had already taken similar action to buy the domain Halo4.com for an undisclosed sum of money.

It is not known if the fraudulent Halo 4 beta site was being used for fraud or "phishing" purposes.

  • They can appeal to have a domain stripped away from someone who actually made it? That's insane. So what if the person who created it isn't actually with Microsoft? Isn't the reason some movies and games get odd domain names because they want to avoid paying for the domain? How can it be legal to just strip it away from someone who already claimed it?
  • So here is the lesson of this story: "Microsoft had already taken similar action to buy the domain Halo4.com for an undisclosed sum of money." Start buying every website for Halo 5 and and Halo 6 since we know those games are coming out.
  • maybe someone should buy fallout4.com so bethesda can sue 'em.
  • You would think they would register these way ahead of time but I guess not due to it being dug up so fast on the internet.
  • That's a pretty awful thing to do to people. Anyway, I'm glad I know about this now and so do the rest of the people who read this article.
  • oh what great shenanigans happen on the internet.

  • They should have to pay for it if they want it. Simple as that...

  • it is one thing to use a game name to make a fan site. That happens all the time. But these guys are doing it to rip us off. All of you on here posting that this is ok need to have your heads examined.
  • Guys, take a read - the fake site was posing as a Beta registration site, meaning they were defrauding consumers and using someone else's IP to do it.  Microsoft is filing for the domain name so YOU won't be ripped off or spammed to oblivion.

  • Did they forget about MikeRoweSoft? They lost a perfectly good Xbox on that deal!
  • Halo 4 will be the best game of 2012 >:|

  • I'm sorry for my language, but who really gives a ***! We just want Halo 4!
  • Another Qwikster?

  • Wow.

  • Yet there were people who got mad at activision for wanting to remove a domain name falsely advertising their game to promote that of a rival videogame.
  • chuckle. I cant wait for this :D cortana babies

  • Cant wait till Halo 4 comes out :P
  • You know, that's a good way to make money. Get rights to a bunch of sites and sell them to the corperations.
