EverQuest Going Free-To-Play

The list of MMO titles going free-to-play continues to grow. Sony Online Entertainment announced the original EverQuest is now going free-to-play this March.

"With the move to free-to-play, players will continue to enjoy the EQ experience they know and love, only now they have the power to choose a model that caters to their play style," SOE said. "Through the new free-to-play model, players will have the options of non-recurring vs. recurring subscriptions, Free vs. Silver memberships, item unlockers, and many more."

As part of this move, all players receive a "Welcome Pack" containing brand-new items. Additional details about all the changes to the game can be found in a blog post by EverQuest producer Thom Terrazas and a new FAQ.

SOE previously announced that EverQuest II and DC Universe Online were going free-to-play.

  • I lost my mmo love. Good news though as this model is becoming more and more popular

  • Is there a lot of people that are gonna swarm to Everquest now that it's free? An over a decade old MMO probably isn't going to have that big a pull these days.
  • about damn time

  • first to watch

  • dude that dont make scenes they just made everquest2 free to play
  • evercrack.  i thought only the first taste was free?

  • How is this game still around when the sequel is out? Maybe I just don't know enough about Everquest, but it seems pointless to play an older version of pretty much the exact same game, especially when both are free.
  • Wow, interesting that EQII was free-to-play before the first EverQuest.

  • f2p is the way to go

  • the fall of subscription based mmos
  • EQ had a much larger/solid subscription base than EQ2 did and that is likely the reason  it went F2P first. It would be an interesting to see if EQ only went F2P due to EQ2 not getting enough attention going to F2P model or if in fact EQ2 did so well going F2P that is was a no brainer to bring EQ on board as well.

  • I refuse to go back. EQ died when Lost Dungeons of Norrath was released.
  • does anyone still play this because at this point even the average mmo is better than this dinosuar. it might have been a dinosaur that in its prime shook the foundations of the game industry but a dino none the less
  • Wow, a fossil! From the early ages!

  • wow, when did this game come out?

  • EverQuest II has been F2P for a while now.

  • I might go back to check it out.

I went back to try it again around 2007, but pretty much all the older zones were 100% dead.

Though I hear they've added NPC mercs you can hire to form your own party.

    That sounded interesting.

  • Biggest shock of this article: The fact that the original EverQuest servers are still up. Congrats to the community for making last so long.

  • The free service is lame. Super limited features include: Races, classes, bag slots, spells available, chat features, item usage and many more. So before, I wasn't paying for EQ, I wasn't playing EQ, I wasn't being psychologically harassed by EQ. But if I started playing free EQ, I'd still not be paying for EQ, I'd sortof be playing EQ, but not really, and I'd most definitely be psychologically harassed by EQ. WOW's trial period alone was far less limited. Everquest hasn't gone free to play, it's gone free to suck. You can play a sucky, limited product for free! :D Good job, SOE! *Sarcastic exaggerated thumbs up*
  • It's about time.
