Kingdoms of Amalur Has Locked Out Single-Player Quests

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning locks out an entire quest line comprised of seven individual quests unless you have an online pass.

Destructoid reports the final retail copy includes a code that unlocks the House of Valor quest line and the Mass Effect 3 tie-in armor. Those who purchase the game new will get the code for free. But if you buy the game used and the code has already been redeemed, you will have to purchase a new code, which typically cost between $5 and $15.

Game Informer asked EA for additional comment and details about the content. We'll update this story if we hear more.

[Update]: Here is EA's statement:

The House of Valor quest line is free bonus content available to those who purchase a new copy of Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning for the Xbox 360 and PS3 by entering the Online Pass included with the game.

PC players who purchase Reckoning at one of the many digital retailers online including Origin, Steam and more, will also receive the House of Valor quest line at no cost.

  • Sucks if you want to rent it.
  • So buy it new. Duh.
  • I'm renting this on GF. Looks like I'll miss 7 missions. Eh, I'll live. Rather buy McDonalds with that $5 to $10 dollars.
  • that is soooooo stupid. And unnecessary.
  • This is where online passes are wrong. They are fine, and I approve if it just locks out ONLINE! You know, >ONLINE
  • ...!?

    Damn online passes.

  • The online Pass= Virus!!!!! STOP IT INDUSTRY!

  • I remember the good ol' days when friends could lend each other games without being annoyed by the main menu reminding me that I should enter a code to play as Catwoman.
  • It is either this or consoles that ban used games. When you compare, I guess I would rather have online passes. I am buying it new for PC anyway.
  • These online passes are starting to get annoying. I understand that companys are doing this to try and get more people to buy games new, but coming from someone who buys a lot of games, we just can't afford $60 bucks a pop for every game that comes out. Theres just too many! Of course theres the games that I for sure will pay full price for like Skyrim, Battlefield 3 and Bioshock Infinite. (And probably Kingdoms of Amalur). But I can't do it with all of them, otherwise I couldn't afford a place to live so there'd be no point! :)
  • just to make you buy the game at retail price. this game isn't a retail price title, sorry ego fucktards
  • please people, dont support online passes, or drm. Its only going to get worse. Dont buy this game.
  • I can understand the publisher/developer wanting people to buy it new but ugh. online pass for single player >.>. Unless this stuff is just threw in content that would be DLC otherwise this is just unnecessary.
  • I hate this new game used game bullsh*t just to make some extra bucks.

  • so what if my dad who plays games but doesn't have the internet bought this? He would just miss out on a ton of SINGLE PLAYER OFFLINE QUESTS?!?? Give me a break.
  • Am I misunderstanding something here? It seems like this article is saying that having the online pass PREVENTS you from accessing the full game. Aren't these o.p.'s supposed to unlock content when you have them?
  • That is kinda lame, but if the game is as big as it claims (and looks) to be then it should hardly be noticeable.

  • This isn't as bad as it sounds. You can't even access the content until you beat the game, which is impossible to do under 30-40 hrs if all you do is the main quest and nothing else. Their internal dev team speed run was 200 hours doing 100% completion. I saw a developer on Destructoid say there are 300+ side quests in the game, and so 7 extra quests after I beat it isn't screwing anyone over. I played the demo and completed at least 3 complete quests in 25 minutes, so I don't think this will change my opinion.
  • I always buy new, and I think these are stupid. I saw a comment though, that made me think about the rumor of the next Xbox banning used games. What if they use a system like this? Where when a new game is played, it registers on that system, and then for use in any other system, you have to pay a small fee for a registration.
  • Well, it really isn't too big of a deal if you plan on buying it close to the release day. GS sells recently released used games for only $5 less.
