Nintendo Announces "Nintendo Network" For Wii U

There have been rumors circulating regarding Nintendo's online network plans for its upcoming Wii U console. Today, president Satoru Iwata announced the first details about the service -- which will have many of the features gamers have come to expect on services like Xbox Live and PSN. The Nintendo Network, as it is called, will be compatible with both 3DS and Wii U.

You can read Iwata's full statement on Nintendo's site, but here are some of the highlights:

-- The Wii U will have a "personal account system" compatible with the Nintendo Network. Iwata said this would make it easier on families that have multiple users of a system in one house. Hopefully, this will work exactly as it does on PS3 or Xbox 360, where you login to your identity and are instantly signed into the network.

-- Post-release downloadable content for packaged games: Iwata said that Wii U games will be supported post-launch. Already, some 3DS titles like Square Enix's Theatrhyhythm will feature downloadable tracks post-launch.

-- Iwata pointed to Mario Kart 7's community functions -- which allow you to organize groups and sort different match types in multiple groups -- as a model for some of the Nintendo Networks functions.

-- Nintendo is also "considering the future possibility of digital distribution of packaged software" for Wii U.

Iwata also said the company would release the system in time for the holidays. He commented, "For the launch of new hardware, it is regarded as a sort of requisite not to miss the critical year-end sales season. The company is aiming to firmly complete the development of the entire system and prepare sufficient software so that the Wii U will be at its best at the time of the launch." Iwata reiterated that Nintendo had "learned a bitter lesson from the launch of the Nintendo 3DS."

  • Nintendo announced a name change for the "wii u" not set in stone. Pretty much the same situation as Nintendo revolution now know to millions as the "Nintendo Wii" Everyone of Nintendo systems weren't trying to compete with "Xbox", "Ps3" or even Sega's late consoles. They don't care to much about the general public as they do general fan base. They mastered motion gaming. Which "Ps3" totally copied. N kinect.....psh.....don't even start. But they've sold abundantly and still dropped price on consoles immensely. Nintendo will, is and always has been the "comfort food" of gaming! (This is coming from someone who plays all 3 major consoles. Nintendo will dominate with their said "Nintendo Network". As far as cost for online membership. I can guarantee they'll probably follow "Sonys" intelligent approach. Nintendo is amazing, mysterious yet wholesome. I can't wait to play their new ultra light OLED controller. Let's just hope the battery life if substantial. Enough for that big controller
  • Sounds pretty sweet.

Welcome to a few years ago, Nintendo.

  • Just amazing! This is another reason why Nintendo is my favorite company. They know what they are doing. I do hope the Wii U battery life is legit.

  • I will probably hold of buying Wii U, because I picked up Wii on day one and I regret that decision. Too few decent games on the wii

  • I hope they can actually pull this off

  • I'll admit, I wasn't feeling great about this when it was first announced, but I so want it to be good that I'm wiling to snort Iwata-san's fairy dust for the time being.

  • That's exciting! online baby!
  • They better make it more reliable and easy to use than what they had before. (not that I ever used it)

  • This was a long time coming for Nintendo if they ever wanted to go more mainstream. I'm glad to see them finally stepping up to the plate.

  • That's good, glad to see they are catching up.
