Vita Sales Continue To Dip In Japan

The PlayStation Vita continues to decline in sales since launching in Japan last December.

Media Create, a Japanese retail tracker, released its weekly sales figures today. According to the report, PlayStation Vita sold 15,219 units for the week (Jan 16 - Jan 22), down from 18,361 the week prior.

Through January, the Vita has sold 76,495 units in Japan, and in its lifetime sold 516,481 to date. PlayStation Vita software also did not chart in the weekly top 20, but that will likely change next week with the release of Tales of Innocence R.

  • And not a single Vita television advertisement to be found in the US...with a little over 2 weeks before launch...I don't know what the situation is in the Japan, but here, when you want people to buy things, it helps to let them know *what* you're selling and *when* it's going to be available.
  • I'm kinda glad I decided to pick up a 3DS now. I'm betting that the system will have to have a price drop if sales continue to dip like they have. I don't know. Maybe the North American sales will be higher, but I'm just not seeing it.
  • quit ringing the death knell for this handheld. If the 3DS survived this will too, however, I do think a price drop is coming in the next few months.
  • Well I'm still getting one sometime, even if just for Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
  • It would have been nice if GI included Sony's statement on the issue. Basically Sony isn't worried because you can't base the US market off the Japanese market.
  • Ouch. Poor Sony. I really hope that this handheld will do better in the US, I'm sure they need the money by now. I'm not one to buy handhelds at all, I don't really think they're worth the money, but hopefully sales will pick up.

  • Japan is more into nintendo I think.
  • I'm also tired of the negative reports on Vita sales in Japan. I hope this system succeeds, as it has a lot of potential. I'm still picking it up at launch. For those that feel like it's too expensive, utilize some trade promotions, at GameStop or Best Buy, to bring the price down.
  • It's not looking too good so far. I'm not sure if I'll be trading my PSP in for it.

  • INCOMING PRICE DROP IN 3...2...1...

  • Im gonna be getting it on launch day. It looks to have so much potential! As long as it deosent end up like the original PSP and only have a handful of games worth playing.

  • Really Doesn't matter to me, im still going to pick it up Day 1, the Vita has what i have been asking handheld's to Offer for several years, im pretty sure once the vita hits the states, sales will go up, maybe nothing too crazy, but it will be better than what japans been doing. Its sad that they don't know whats good for them
  • still getting one
  • I'm a Nintendork, but i have a soft spot for Sony. I loved the PS2 and the PSP. I hope they pull through!
  • Oh yeah because we were expecting the sales the just bloom out of no where. This isn't news, please stop with these pointless articles.
  • It's more disturbing than anything that the PSP is outselling it...

  • k
  • The main problem seems to be that many people think of handheld gaming as "childish," which is incredibly disappointing. Vita is an awesome piece of tech and really just needs a good ad campaign, but even then I don't know if it will ever succeed in the mass market. One of the sad truths of today's world is that people are more than willing to pay for a phone that can contribute a couple quick minutes of fun mobile gaming but not willing to pay for a device that can deliver hours of entertainment in a similar manner.
  • I don't plan on buying one either. The Vita has waay to many features going on for a handheld. You have to have a degree in rocket surgery just to use it. I'm not surprised to see the sales take a dive. handhelds should be simple gaming. the PSP is the last one I purchased and it looks like it will stay that way.
  • I'm thinking about cancelling my preorder until I see some good reviews on games. Are mobile apps killing the handhelds? They can't be helping
