Next Xbox Rumors Inbound [Update]

[Update] : A new report from Kotaku this morning says industry sources claim the next Xbox will play Blu-ray discs, may not play used games, and will ship with the next iteration of Kinect. Kotaku said Microsoft may implement some sort of anti-used games system for its next console, which could include linking a copy of a game to your Xbox Live account. The reports says right now it's completely hypothetical and is not clear how it may be included, if at all.

One source familiar with Microsoft's plans for the new Xbox said Microsoft plans to ship their new Xbox with a new version of its red-hot Kinect hands-free sensor system. The new Kinect would contain an on-board processor, a feature originally intended for the first Kinect. That processor would enable a new Kinect to more effectively detect users' motions.

[Original post] The Internet is swirling with rumors today about the graphics capability of Microsoft's next console.

According to a report from Fudzilla published today, the power behind the next Xbox will be a PowerPC CPU married to a modified ATI Southern Islands 7000 series GPU. The code name for the 32nm chip is Oban, and the report says it's currently in production. The first run of these chips are being made for development kits only.

Fudzilla's report suggests chips for consumer consoles will go into production by the end of the year, suggesting we won't see Microsoft's new console until 2013 at the earliest. Meanwhile, IGN says the GPU will be based on the 6000 series instead, akin to the Radeon HD 6670.

So far, Microsoft isn't commenting on any of the rumors.

Comments
  • If that rumor is true then I see Microsoft losing the next console race. PS4 and PC will make huge leaps. Long live Steam. Also the pirates out there will figure out how to circumvent any kind of check system.

  • So...they're trying to put Gamestop out of business?  Smart move...u.u

  • If that "won't play used games" bit is true then I'll stick with my 360.

  • Why the anti-used effort? it's stupid. You can't lend your friends games? you can't sell the ones you don't want? you can't buy used ones? definetely stupid

  • If this is true it's most likely a bid at preventing game sharing. If I'm forced to buy new games I demand that the price be lowered. There is no way I'm spending $60 on a game I can't lend out or play at a friend's house without having my account connected on their xbox.

  • i dont really care because 1. i dont play xbox and 2. microsoft sucks :)

  • If this rumor is true, I will be passing.  Can't justify spending $60 on a game for a 4 hour campaign then be stuck with it.

  • May not play used games??

  • I'm still not really sure how you would prevent a console from playing used games.

  • i'm hoping when they announce a ps4 in the next E3 they will be like "it's inside of your ps3!" how awesome would that be lol

  • They do that and THey will have one less XBoxer and Sony will have one more PlayStationer
  • "May not play used games"?!?! What's that about?!?!

  • If the console cant play used games it means one thing.  The console will HAVE to be hooked up to the net.  Im assuming this can only be accomplished if every Xbox game sold comes with a code you enter upon purchase unlocking said game.  How swell.

Does the new console also come with the nifty feature of conking out entirely after a year or so?  I wont even consider buying Microsoft's next system if this is the case.  I was pretty sure I wasn't going too anyways.  Got fed up with Microsoft years ago.  Its Playstation for me all the way.

  • E3 cant get here soon enough
  • Great. Used games are a good market for those of us late to the party. That and lending out your games. Would that die out, too?

  • I hope the next Xbox brings some new IP's.

  • Mod

Not playing used games would be complete suicide. Not only would it hurt the people who borrow games from their friends (though online passes are contributing to that as well) but it would also hurt the people who trade games in and put that money towards NEW games.

I can't see them being that idiotic and destroy a good portion of their customers. Don't believe it.

  • May not play used games??? haaaa!!! and people are complaining about the some games on the PS3 having online pass. This on the other hand is taking waaaaaay to far.

Although that part of the rumor I think is complety bogus....at least I hope it is.

  • No used games? Fail.

  • gonna need a price on that
