Rumor: Microsoft Dropping Microsoft Points System

Xbox 360 owners have been confused and annoyed by the Microsoft Points currency setup since the system launched -- or at least I have. If a new rumor is to be believed, though, this frustrating extra bit of calculation for every Xbox Live purchase may be going away very soon.

Inside Mobile Apps reports that the Microsoft Points system will cease to exist by the end of 2012 according to "a source with knowledge of the company's decision." Supposedly the system will be replaced with the sane alternative of using actual cash transactions based on the region the console is set to.

We'll update this story if we're able to hear anything solid from Microsoft or another source. Personally speaking, though, this is one Xbox Live change I would happily get behind.

  • How is this confusing? Is no one else confused by this system?
  • Hopefully this is true. I don't have an Xbox 360, but the points system was just stupid. At least Nintendo's Wii points make sense (2000 = $20), but using real money makes much more sense.
  • And good riddance. That's all I really have to say about that.
  • I actually like the system since they don't do odd multiples like $4.99. Plus, 80 points to a dollar is fairly simple.
  • I don't mind the points system, but having it switch to regular monetary terms would be a lot more convenient when considering purchases.
  • What was the point in the first place? It seems like an unnecessary step in making a downloadable purchase...
  • THANK GOD.

  • I know people _____ about it but honestly I don't see how friggin hard it is for people to divide by 80 for numbers that are meant to get a solid number like 400 or 1200 to get 5, 15, etc. Honestly, you can really only blame yourself if you're thrown off by it. Sure it may be sly of MS but that doesn't let you pass being dumb about it either.

Speaking of this though does anyone know if there's any joint that sells Pre-Money for Steam? I just got my PC rig built and I'd like to use Steam but I'm not comfortable with attaching a credit card to it. Does Steam even do pre-paid cards?
  • The only thing that has ever bothered me was a purchase I made that left me with an odd number of points. If anyone has any clue as to what I can spend the extra seven points I have, please contact me below. Maybe there is a shoestring I buy for my avatar that he can hang himself from.
  • Bleh, don't really care whether it stays or not. I really don't see how the system is confusing but oh well.

  • What about people who's country don't support credit card transactions on live? There will be vouchers like PSN? Say... a card that worths 20$ etc... Don't have an X-box 360 so, i don't know if it already exists.

  • I've never understood why companies were so desperate to ham-fist these currencies in. A separation from the real world, I guess. And of course a masking of how much you're really spending. It's more unnecessary than it is confusing...
  • Things I wasn't expecting to see: defenders of the unnecessarily obtuse points system designed to force consumers to spend more money than necessary for the purchases they want. You win again at surprising me, Internet!
  • Good don't see why they don't just use dollars like PSN. It won't look like they are hiding anything and people that are not into games, when buying gifts will understand it.

  • I think the 3ds does it best with straight up money on your account and games cost a dollar amount.
  • Hooray for common sense.
  • Well I'm neither against it nor for it. Wonder how that works.
  • *** microsoft points

  • Well @#$%. I hope you can still buy cards to redeem codes, because I sure don't have a credit card.
