UPDATE: HBO May Turn Indie Game: The Movie Into TV Show

UPDATE: The creators of Indie Game: The Movie cleared up some early misinformation about the potential TV show on the film's Facebook page. Apparently the show will not be a comedy and was only mistaken as such because most of HBO's half-hour content fits into that genre. The Facebook post also makes it clear that the show isn't a sure thing yet, but the filmmakers seem excited about the prospects.

ORIGINAL STORY: Indie Game: The Movie, a documentary about independent games in case you couldn't tell by the title, has been picked up by HBO to become a fictional half-hour comedy.

The documentary, which follows the development of games like Super Meat Boy, Braid, and the unreleased Fez, premiered at Sundance this weekend and was good enough to attract HBO. I haven't had a chance to see the movie myself, but it is one I have been interested in ever since the trailer (check it out below) appeared online.

A fictional half-hour comedy based on what appears to be a serious documentary seems like an odd choice, but HBO has never steered me wrong when it comes to making me laugh. They did finance Mr. Show with Bob and David after all.

Just a quick heads up: the trailer does contain some harsh language.

  • Awesome, looks like it might be good.

  • It's surprising, but I'm actually looking forward to seeing this movie. I've played the games featured and I really enjoyed them.

  • I think you have a typo there, kyle
  • I'd watch it.

  • Well, I'll watch this. Just ask... how/where do I watch this?

  • "...have been interested r in evesince the..." Lol I think you misplaced an R. This does look like it's worth a watch. Except HBO costs to much for my blood. And cash.
  • Sounds good to me. The movie, however, looks fantastic.

  • Please make a game based on the TV show. "Indie Game: The Movie: The Show: The Game."

  • Hmm, I watch a lot of documentaries on both television and at the local museum cinema and this looks a tad overly dramatic. However, I would still like to watch it. Oh yeah, Mr. Show was light years ahead of it's time. One of my all time favorites.
  • Won't be long before video games completely take over mainstream entertainment Movie and TV wise. Hell half of the movies and tv shows nowadays are just ripp-offs of video games anyway.

  • I would watch that.

  • I saw the movie at its premier, and it was amazing. One of the best documentaries I've ever seen, so this is good news.

  • I'm a bit skeptical of this being good. I don't think that there has been any show or movie that was good that had video games in it as a major focus, but seeing as how this is HBO and it is more about the people who make games maybe it can be fun to watch.
  • I want to watch this documentary so badly... Does anyone know why HBO would pick up the rights to make a little comedy out of this? Why wouldn't they just make their own "indie game dev comedy"?
  • I'd like to see their reactions for if they do fail after two years in the works. I know this is probably the "drama" for the film, but, it's just a game that you wasted almost a small, if not, huge fraction of your life. And if they're just going to take their own criticism to heart and curse their names and long progress, why even bother trying to make it happen? Don't get mad, be glad and content there are gamers out there who look forward to anything to play.
  • A comedy made out of a documentary about indie games? That is really strange. I hope it turns out good, though.

  • So, HBO will just make The Big Bang Theory with indie game makers? Where every one of them have a hot girlfriend? Hmmm... No. http://plasticvideogamecomic.blogspot.com/
  • This will be perfect once they add HBO GO to Xbox!

  • Looks like a great movie.  Don't know about making it a comedy

  • id watch that
