ESA Drops SOPA Support

The Entertainment Software Association, a trade group that represents U.S video game publishers, has dropped its support for the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).

"From the beginning, ESA has been committed to the passage of balanced legislation to address the illegal theft of intellectual property found on foreign rogue sites," the group said in a statement released to media outlets. "Although the need to address this pervasive threat to our industry's creative investment remains, concerns have been expressed about unintended consequences stemming from the current legislative proposals.

"Accordingly, we call upon Congress, the Obama Administration, and stakeholders to refocus their energies on producing a solution that effectively balances both creative and technology interests. As an industry of innovators and creators, we understand the importance of both technological innovation and content protection and are committed to working with all parties to encourage a balanced solution."

The ESA said earlier this month it strongly supported the bill.

Earlier today, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid postponed the January 24 vote for the PIPA bill, while House Judiciary Committee Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) issued a statement this morning saying he will delay action on the SOPA.

A list of all the video game companies that are members of the ESA can be found here. The ESA also hosts E3, the annual trade show held in Los Angeles.

  • ESA has finally joined the good side......
  • I think if SOPA had gone through or they pick it up again close to E3, people should make a real statement. People should boycott E3 lol

I know it would suck, but at the same time, it would make a huge statement. E3 isn't just talked about on gaming news sites, it get's talked about on regular TV news too.

  • Good.  Now if the bills would just kind of spontaneously combust, that would be great.

  • About time they crossover

  • Again with the concerns... if you cared you would have seen it in the first place. I wish these people would STOP LYING.
  • I agree something needs to get done but SOPA is way over the top.
  • That E3 boycott is sounding pretty good about now.

  • Well good. So why didn't they just do it before like a smart company would do?....Oh..

  • I like how it took them to this point to say that "we need to find a balanced solution."

  • Hm... I am gonna guess that the E3 boycott of places like ScrewAttack and Cinemassacre are what turned them around.
  • SOPA was horrible conceived from start. But I agree we need some kind of legislation, preferable international and discussed with everyone. http://plasticvideogamecomic.blogspot.com/
  • they are idiots for supporting it in the 1st place  but good

Why not just come out and say "We didn't fully understand the long-term implications of this bill. We apologize for our stupidity." That would've been a nice apology I think.

That said, this is a pretty big blow to SOPA considering these companies were a large part of the reason it was made. Still upset something like this was even brought up in the first place but a victory is a victory.
  • I love how all these companies, including Microsoft, suddenly switch from supporting SOPA to condemning it all because it has negative public attention. And yet they "sneakily" still support PIPA because it has not incurred a public outcry and few have noticed it's the same exact thing.

PIPA has only been temporarily shelved while the senators are in recess. SOPA most likely won't pass but it's not over yet.

  • I look forward to a day when everyone is forced to do exactly what the government tells them to and anyone that complains just disappears forever. Everything nice and shiny and clean and orderly.
  • How about you take all that money you spend lobbying Washington and put it towards technologically achieving your goals without forcing people to do or not do anything? There's an idea. Keep the government out of it entirely.
  • Well it doesnt surprise me these losers supported SOPA because they are to do with publishers, I would frankly like to see Sony apologise for supporting SOPA I was very pissed about that.

I wish I was present when rupert murdoch heard about it not going so well with all his whining on Twitter about the whole issue I hope he cried. Then his tear probably turned to dust.

  • Good. I was very happy to hear last night during the GOP debate that all 4 nominees are anti-SOPA.

  • Well Good!
