Did Obsidian And Bethesda View Fallout Differently?

Obsidian Entertainment is currently working on the South Park game for THQ, but they’ve also worked on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords and Fallout: New Vegas. In fact, many of Obsidian’s team members worked on the original Fallout titles before Bethesda bought the property. What did Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart think about working with Bethesda on a property that they’d help create? Someone actually asked him that question…that someone was us.

How did Obsidian’s and Bethesda’s opinions about Fallout differ? Urquhart explains:

  • FALLOUT 4!
  • Someone's gonna comment on the whole FO3 vs FO New Vegas soon enough but I wanted to say that New Vegas, while not getting that FO3 apocalyptic feeling, did follow the universe much more better. NV just gets overshadowed, that's all. Dang it, just partner up again and make FO4 that much more amazing.
  • It seems that there's more to the interview than this brief clip. I hope GI will be posting the rest.
  • I'm not sure that I actually got anything out of that. Obsidian's versions were top down which can be really great and it was Bethesda that made it into the 1st/3rd person shooter the series is today. Instead of following Bethesda's model maybe Obsidian should have done another top down with the series. I think that could have been interesting. Or i'm completely out of my mind and have no idea what i'm talking about.
  • Fallout New vegas was horrible, and virtually unplayable with how buggy and glitchy it was. Fallout 3 was better, and at least worked for the most part.
  • Despite what people say, I still enjoyed New Vegas.
  • fallout: meh
  • Fallout New Vegas is honestly one of my all time favorite games. I'd rank it 3rd, behind Skyrim and Portal 2. it's just so great
  • I have to say this... Fallout:Equestria.
  • Obsidian really made it closer linked to the original Fallouts 1 and 2. There were a lot of things that reminded me of the older games, and I thought they did a good job at re-imagining the West side of the US. I'm hoping to see them develop future Fallout spin-off/side project titles.
  • Yes they did, Bethesda Made a compelling and amazing Game that kept me on edge the entire time. Obsidian made a Sloppily Made Attempt at what Bethesda had done
  • Bethesda, you are the best.

  • I don't think I'll ever be able to tell you how awesome these videos are.

  • It must feel so strange, to have someone else buy your baby, then pay you to work on it again.

  • When I play a game, I usually look past all the bugs and glitches to the point where they really do not factor in to my overall opinion of the game. I overlooked all the bugs in Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim. Unfortunately, I just could not do the same for New Vegas. The bugs were so experience breaking and just got in the way so often that the majority of time I spent playing the game was checking the fallout wiki to make sure to avoid all the bugs of a particular quest. The most annoying bug for me was where if I let the game sit idle (including paused or on the pip boy screen) for more than about... 2 or 3 minutes, the game would freeze upon me pressing any button and then I'd get a "This disc is unreadable." error. So basically anytime I had to step away for a moment, I'd have to save and return to dashboard. This is merely one of the many many glitches that detracted significantly from my experience. However, it could be that I somehow just got one of the buggiest copies of the game out there... (I played the game on an Xbox 360. Dunno if that would have anything to do with it.) I had two other friends who said they hadn't even experienced half the bugs I described to them. Also, after several patches, some game breaking bugs were fixed. (never the dreaded idle glitch, sadly.) So overall, I did enjoy New Vegas, but I can't mention it without mentioning the several bugs that caused tons of frustration.
  • Elder Scrolls: FALLOUT Sounds catchy.
  • Bethesda did it so much BETTER! Fallout 3 was by far the best fallout and now I know why...

  • Bethesda and Obsidian sure do spring up some controversy in the fanbase.

  • Honestly, I've never liked the Fallout games as much as others. I like everything about them except the actual shooting.

  • Dude it has to suck knowing that people took your idea and made it better than you and that now when they think of a good fallout game they think fallout 3 not NV
