Prototype Morphing Into A Digital Comic Series

by Jeff Cork on Jan 17, 2012 at 03:19 AM

One of the trickier parts of a sequel can be explaining how the events of the previous story line up with the new one. Radical Entertainment is tackling that challenge with help from Dark Horse Comics. An upcoming digital comic series will explain how players moved from Alex Mercer's story to new hero Sgt. James Heller's adventure.

“We’re always looking for meaningful ways to expand the Prototype universe, and Dark Horse Comics is an industry-leading creative powerhouse delivering best-in-class graphic storytelling that integrates deeply to the core of our IP,” gushes Ken Rosman, studio head at Radical. “With this partnership, our fans will finally be given answers to some dramatic loose ends from the first Prototype game, as well as the truth behind Alex Mercer’s descent and evolution into a twisted shadow of his former self for Prototype 2.”

The three-issue arc will launch February 15 on Dark Horse Comics' digital site, with the remaining installments becoming available every two weeks.

“Sgt. James Heller’s heart-wrenching backstory meshed with the sheer amount of over-the-top shape-shifting action in Prototype 2 lend themselves perfectly to a comic book series,” says Dave Marshall, editor of Dark Horse Comics. “We worked extremely close with Radical Entertainment’s story team for Prototype 2, and can’t wait to visually walk fans through the many dark secrets strewn throughout the tattered world of New York Zero!”

The first installment, illustrated by Paco Díaz is called "The Anchor," and, follows Alex Mercer's journey after the first game. "The Survivors" (illustrated by Chris Staggs) shows how New York's residents are dealing with the Blacklight virus as they try to escape the quarantined city. It all wraps up with Victor Drujiniu's "The Labyrinth," which shows how Heller fits into the overall story.

Expect to see lots of blood, tentacles, and crashing helicopters.
