White House Explains SOPA/PIPA Position

Three officials from the Obama administration articulated the White House's position on proposed anti-piracy legislation, balancing the need for strong antipiracy measures while respecting both freedom of expression and the way information and ideas are share on the Internet.

The statement, which was made in response to a pair of polls drafted through the White House's official site, was released yesterday.

"Right now, Congress is debating a few pieces of legislation concerning the very real issue of online piracy, including the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), the PROTECT IP Act and the Online Protection and Digital ENforcement Act (OPEN). We want to take this opportunity to tell you what the Administration will support—and what we will not support. Any effective legislation should reflect a wide range of stakeholders, including everyone from content creators to the engineers that build and maintain the infrastructure of the Internet.

"While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet."

The statement then urges private parties to come up with their own ways to prevent piracy, via voluntary measures.

"Moving forward, we will continue to work with Congress on a bipartisan basis on legislation that provides new tools needed in the global fight against piracy and counterfeiting, while vigorously defending an open Internet based on the values of free expression, privacy, security and innovation."

  • HA It's nice to here this. but it sounds a little too good.

EDIT: sorry comment was a little vague, what i mean to say is that ever since this bill was Proposed we heard nothing but horrible things about it. So i think it's nice to have a new perspective on it.
  • So, does this mean the White House does or does not support SOPA and PIPA?
  • DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM. the obama administration has done nothing but lie to us. if this bill gets signed it will be the end of the internet as we know it. they legalized the patirot act. they signed the ndaa bill. they gave the bankers 9.2 trillion dollars... how much more are they going to take from us? please do your research people.
  • Maybe before SOPA hits pirates will game to their senses...then they wont have to pass that law. lol....ok I apologize trolling.

  • well thats good I guess
  • Since the 90's, or maybe 80's, key words used on Capitol Hill make for unlimited boundaries in laws. Piracy, terror, etc.

This act is stupid, and I can say that there are many other things the US government should devote their time to. Any time you put the words defend and (human) values in the same sentence, one will have to give. Reflect back for years, you'll know which one will give out.

I'm no hactivist, or whatever dumb label they stick to them to be different, but I am someone who acknowledges particular legislative lingo and this... this is not good. The doors it will open lead only to disaster.

EDIT: Before anyone thinks I'm trolling the White House, I'm not. If this affects my gaming in any way (all legit), I'll be perturbed then.
  • Finally, some GOOD news on this. The President has power, and that should really help get this NOT signed.
  • Protect freedom of expression, but not protect freedom of due process (military can now imprison citizens indefinitely without trial, based on really flimsy suspicion reasons [stuff like having food for 2 weeks]). some *** up priorities.
  • Here's The Odd Thing. I Was The One Who Sent Them The News Yet They Didn't Say My Name. Strange.
  • At least some people in congress are working towards fixing this. I just wish the others would see how much freedom would be taken away if something like SOPA passes without reforming.

  • I hope this is true. This bill should just not be signed, period.
  • My first thought from seeing the title was Pipo.

  • *Beats head against desk* I don't know what to think anymore!
  • People are starving and losing their jobs and the white house is worried about piracy. *** this stupid government and the idiots that elected them. They don't even realize how important piracy is. Without piracy digital content prices would be WAY overpriced.
  • They also supposedly didn't support the National Defense Authorization Act, but they passed that anyway. This bill needs to be killed not modified.

  • Well that's good. Hopefuly they can knock some sense into the Senate (or Congress, I forgot which it is). Also, did anyone else read part of this in Obama's voice?
  • I hope Game Informer will join the SOPA strike on the 18th.

A lot of Game Informer is news with links to other sites. If GI ever linked to a site that infringed copyright somewhere, they could be shut down and blocked under SOPA.
  • I hope this works.  Freedom of expression is the basis of this country and should not be violated under any terms.  I do not support piracy of any kind, nor do I do it.  It is theft and it will hurt the gaming industry.  I LOVE gaming and will always be a gamer.

  • "We will continue to work with Congress on a bipartisan basis (or simply not work at all if they don't agree with us and sit around as tax payers pay for our food and comfortable seating)..."
  • Wait, am I reading this right? Congress is doing something right for once by postponing the release of a potentially dangerous set of bills?
