Final Fantasy XIII-2's Achievements/ Trophies Are Nice And Vague

In addition to giving players a reason to keep playing, achievements and trophies often seem to have another purpose: spoiling key story moments. It's tough to estimate the number of big surprises we've had ruined for us after taking a quick glance at a game's incentives. That's why Final Fantasy XIII-2's list is kind of awesome.

The descriptive text for the story-related achievements read a lot like poetry. "Left behind a normal life, and began a journey through time," is certainly more interesting than "Finished chapter 1," and "Acknowledged the threat facing the world, and decided to fight back," beats the pants off of "Beat XXX in battle." Of course, that degree of ambiguity cuts both ways. Good luck determining what "Defeated an army's worth of enemies" translates to, or estimating what constitutes a fortune.

Looks like you'll have to wait for the game to hit the PS3 and Xbox 360 on January 31 to find out. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip, Tyler!

  • Haha, that's always awesome. I'm sure someone will write up a guide about specifics.

Edit: I can't actually look at the list, gives me a sorting error or something.
  • I kind of like it better this way. There's no spoilers, and when you beat chapter 1 of a game for instance it's a lot nicer to see a trophy with a cool name pop up than one so generic.

  • Yea, I spoiled an endgame sequence by looking at achievements once and it sucked.

  • ...Where's treasure hunter 2.0 : (

Normally I loathe achievements that don't have fives or zeros at the end, but I plan to get them all so it isn't a bother, lucky me. There are a lot of secret achievements though, even for a JRPG.
  • Can't read the achievements...that sucks.

  • I heard from Japan sources that this game sucks.
  • Your welcome for the tip! I was excited once I found this, makes me want to play it more. Disappointed by your guys score, but to each his own. I just can't wait.

  • I played through the demo of this, and... well... I'm not mad, I'm not angry, I'm just... disappointed in you SquareEnix.
  • The thing that I don't like about the Final Fantasy series is the battle sequences. I wonder how you can say it is a completely open world enviromnent when the battle sequences are like battles from a handheld pokemon game.
  • I kind of like that idea. Forces extra exploration and play for those trophy hunters, and it still means absolutely nothing for people like me who value trophies as much as I value another person's bowel movements (meaning not at all).
  • I like it when they're vague because I've gotten spoiled a couple of times by the descriptions while looking through the lists. :/

  • Some nice achievements! Another 100 hour game for me

  • FF XIII did the same thing. I think the best way to hide story related achievements though is to just make them secret achievements.

Also, thanks Jeff, I had no idea today was Saturday.

  • I like it better this way, there are no spoilers, but still a description.

  • The achievement/trophies have been available for quite awhile. Stay on top of either ps3t.org or x360a.com for all your achievement and trophy needs!
  • Yeah totally liking how they are adding a little of variety to their Achievements/Trophy names, like they did with XIII.

  • In my experience, most campaign related achievements are labeled "secret". At the very least, endgame outcome achievements are. I have noticed some games that could potentially give away spoilers, but for me they are few and far between.

  • Thankfully they haven't gone so far as to make them COMPLETELY vague, though. I wouldn't want to earn the achievement, "You did a thing at a place sometime!" :-)

  • Cool. I played the demo and I liked it. The battle system is pretty much the same, but I did enjoy the side quest and I can already see my self spending lots of hours in the whole "Monster Hunting" part of the game and leveling them up, lol.

Also I like the Adornment system for the monsters. Hats on Tonberries are awesome.
