Minecraft Creator To Protest SOPA

Markus "Notch" Persson said today he will take down Minecraft.net and Mojang.com on January 18 in protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act.

He did not give any indication how long the protest will last. The bill would allow content creators to censor websites they feel are infringing on their content. Notch said one of the big reasons Minecraft has been so successful was from people posting screenshots of the game and videos on YouTube,

The version of Minecraft playable on PC through Minecraft.net will be unavailable during the protest, however downloaded copies will still be.

  • I wish I had a worthy pc so I could play this game. Although with Skyrim in my hands adding this game would make it official that I'd have no life.
  • that silly

  • I don't know why these publishers are pissed over free advertising. Notch has the right idea.
  • I'm glad Notch is protesting it. And if it passes, I'm glad that he has already made sure that we can continue to make Minecraft videos and pictures by putting into the EULA of Minecraft.
  • Seems like everyone is using January 18th as their day to protest SOPA. I saw on Facebook that some developer would be taking down their beta on that day. Also, Anonymous was tweeting that they would not tweet anything on that day.
  • Minecraft, Google, Facebook, and other major sites are all going on protest that day! I think that for many ppl (business tycoons, etc) the Apocalypse has been re-scheduled early this year!

  • Awesome! The more businesses we can have protesting this thing the better.
  • Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan i sooooooooo wanted to play this game

  • Good, the more people protest about this, the more likely it is that it won't pass.
  • yeah! fight the power!

  • one word, zeitgeist.....
  • no more sopa!

    go Notch!

(good thing I got the downloaded version.) ;)

  • ALLRIGHT!! F*K UP SOPA!!!
  • Good for him.  Way to take a stand in a big way.

  • good thing i've got a downloaded version...

  • Wow, that's hardcore. It's for a good cause, though, I guess.

  • This will make some people mad.

  • Sucks I cant play that day

  • Good. SOPA needs to be stopped. Gets the point across.

  • Very interesting, and since downloads will be up I assume sales will still be enabled too so they aren't really costing themselves money (in fact they will probably save some money on bandwidth, heh) but at the same time making a bold act in the process.  This obviously isn't an option for a lot of companies that don't support SOPA, but I hope it catches on as much as it can.
