Rumor: Dark Souls Getting DLC

According to a source speaking to EGM, Namco Bandai and developer FromSoftware plan to release "some form of expanded content" for Dark Souls in the first quarter of this year. The magazine says the content is currently nearing the end of development.

As for a possible hint of the content, EGM notes that FromSoftware recently filed a trademark for "Yami no Mori” in Japan, which translates to “Forest of Darkness” or “Dark Forest."

When asked about the report, a Namco Bandai representative told Game Informer the company doesn't comment on rumor or speculation.

Any news of downloadable content for Dark Souls comes as a surprise given that the game's creator, Hidetaka Miyazaki, recently said in an interview with us, "I wanted to create a complete package of the game without adding any DLC. That is the reason why I am not planning any DLC for Dark Souls."

    I was originally happy that Miyazaki said that Dark Souls wouldn't have any DLC. But after playing Dark Souls so much, I realize that I just don't want it to end. Ever. Bring on the DLC, I say!

    EDIT: I know this would probably never happen, but it'd be awesome if the DLC was the sixth Archstone from Demon's Souls!

    yeah, this seems dumb. The dark souls world already feels like a complete world. Any expansion on it would feel awkward.

    Fair enough :) I don't actually own Dark Souls but I'm glad for those that do and enjoy it will get more, hopefully awesome, content.

    The critical part of the DLC will be how it effects the PVP balance: the content can't be seen as conferring an unfair advantage on those who have it, otherwise the whole PVP scene will suffer from "bought advantage". My view is that it will have to come in some "extra" content form, like a survival mode, or bonus area to explore without additional equipment in order to preserve the PVP balance. The real lack of questing in Dark Souls means that it won't be a case of "we've added this side-quest to the storyline that will take you to this super secret new area". It just wouldn't fit or make much sense . . .
