Layoffs Hit Id Software

Bethesda confirmed an unspecified number of employees were let go from Rage developer id Software today. The company ensures these moves are part of its standard business practice, however. The developer is still hiring and future id titles are not affected by these layoffs.

Below is Bethesda's full statement:

As part of its standard business practice, id regularly evaluates staffing to ensure it has a workforce that meets the needs of the studio. As part of that process, some id employees were recently let go.

Id is still recruiting and hiring qualified developers, and development work on future id titles continues unabated.

id Software is currently developing Doom 4, which does not have a release date.

  • The hell happening lately? Studio closed and now employees leave a legendary company? Oh man...
  • Too many people losing their jobs.

  • Must be hard losing your job, while finding out the same company you're leaving is currently hiring. Nature of the business I guess, one project or game to the next.
  • As long as these lay-offs keep the company at its best, then so be it. Still... losing a job isn't fun. =/

  • I liked Rage. It wasn't "great" but I had a lot of fun with it. Those wing blades are some of the most fun weapons I've used in a game in years. Sad to see their getting hit with layoffs.
  • "some id employees were recently let go."

"Id is still recruiting and hiring qualified developers"

so basically what you're saying is... nothing new. Just a staff change.

  • That's a shame :/ I mean I support having a stronger team and I get that layoffs are necessary as in any business but it's always sad news.

  • That sucks

  • ***. :/ I wish id was in a good position like Valve. Where they're free to make their own decisions without some snooty publisher dipping its toes in their pie. Rage wasn't great, but it was a pretty *** good shooter. They don't deserve this.

  • It's terrible how there have been so many layoffs at studios lately.

  • Wow that's terrible. Rage was a great game, too..

  • Its what happens when a good PC company starts making really sh*ty pc ports...
  • so they layoff people because they want to hire new people. so they get rid off the wise and good developers for unexperienced one.
  • Never good news when there are layoffs but it's how things go usually.

  • I suppose we have nothing to worry about, then.

  • I will be genuinely surprised if this could even be considered a layoff in the conventional sense of the word. If they are continuing to hire, then beyond the usual "trimming the fat" id was likely looking for an excuse to let go some less than stellar performers, would be my guess.
  • I was just about to mention something about Doom 4 but didn't have to. Phew that's good hear. sad to hear ppl got laid off but its not effecting doom :D

  • Man back to back stories of layoffs, I hope this is the last we hear of for a while.

  • Going to go out on a limb and say this doesn't bode well for post-launch patches and DLC plans.

They're spinning it like it's not a big deal, which obviously what they're going to do. But both Bethesda and id Software have put out games before, and to my knowledge they never felt the need to release a statement afterwards explaining the need to let people go.

  • That's odd considering they just released a game that did pretty well in sales. Too bad, always like ID .
