Vita Sales Decline Third Straight Week

The third week sales results for PlayStation Vita in Japan were released today, and it's not looking too good.

According to Japan retail tracker Media Create, Sony's latest handheld only sold 42,648 units. This is a drop from the 72,479 Sony sold in week 2 and 321,407 in week 1. Total Vita sales in Japan currently sit at nearly 437,000 units.

Sales for the 3DS also dropped to 197,952 from 482,200 the week prior, but the handheld still led all console sales. These figures represent sales from December 26, 2011 through January 1, 2012.

  • I wish I had time to game on handhelds. Lets see, my last handhelds were the gameboy color or Sega Gamegear.
  • Vita and 3DS sales decline. Other article Infinity Blade surpasses $30 million. Guess handhelds are facing a serious threat... I still support both dedicated handhelds.
  • Handhelds are dying, the moment when they realize nobody wants them is fast approaching.
  • This does not surprise me at all.

  • Lets just see how it will sell here in the west! I know im getting one! :P
  • As cool as the tech might be, it's not providing a benefit to consumers that matches the cost. In a poor economy, that's even more of a problem than usual, since there are fewer well-off buyers who want to show off their new toy. Nintendo's having the same problem with the 3DS, and yet the DS is still doing fine. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but it does one thing really well -- it plays great games with little inconvenience to users. My guess is that Sony will retool the factories and pop out a "Vita Lite" sometime soon, that strips down some functionality and lowers the price. Unfortunately there are numerous reasons why that probably won't help much.
  • Perhaps companies who make consoles should ensure they have a few good games on release day, not games to hold you over on your couple hundred dollar investment until something good can be released.
  • The argument that handhelds are losing their ground just got a little bit stronger. I wonder what will happen when a handheld (Sony, Nintendo) becomes a tablet? WiiU is kind of doing that, but only at home. You have to admit, seeing how Infinity Blade and many other games do on tablets, it's probably something worth trying.
  • Well the early adopters already have their system, there is not much interest in importing the system since the release dates between regions are too close, some people are waiting for the manufacturing defects to be ironed out and there isn't a Killer App for the system yet. That and Japan is a terrible gauge these days for worldwide success. You could make the argument that it should be selling better because of the success of PSP in the region but the PSP didn't start doing crazy numbers til Monster Hunter Portable, I don't think another solid but par-for-the-course hot shots game (excuse the terrible pun) is going to fit that bill. Doesn't mean its going to do bangers here but I don't think these numbers mean much.
  • who is going to buy a vita when it get to USA? i WILL!
    "Warning sony fanboy alert!"
  • I'm about to lose my flippin lid!!! Over the past year I have currently saved and traded-in $591 in anticipation of spending around $800 for the WiFi Vita, the 32gb memory card, and around 10 Vita games and accesories. I'm so freaking tired of all this negativity surrounding the Vita. Once the Vita releases and makes it to the Holiday season of 2012 the gaming community will realize that 1. This is the Handheld we've been waiting for our whole lives 2. Remember the 3DS? These same doom and gloom headlines plagued its release for its first 9 months 3.Iphone games are fun (being an Iphone owner, myself) but the lack of physical buttons will never trump the true gaming power of the VITA! Understand that U.S. gamers are only 47 days away from being treated to the first ever portal system to truly rival anything that can be done on home consoles with its graphics, gameplay and connectivity. I'm freaking pumped for one.... Can you tell?
  • Hopefully the system is actually good!
  • Handhelds are being replaced by smartphones and tablets. I remember a post some time ago by an analyst arguing mobiles won't hurt game dedicated handhelds. I'll wait and see how Vita behaves worldwide. And Sony, STOP trying to mimic Apple, because it looks terrible. Return to the XrossMediaBar and make an improvment ont it, otherwise you've lost your indentity.
  • Mod
42,648 units sold is a bad sales week? @ $250 a pop thats $10,662,000; in one week. Now if they only moved 4,000 units I'd understand getting concerned.
  • 3DS is doing very well now, outpacing the DS and Wii for sales in the initial year. What a turnaround, that was accomplished by two things. Finally releasing good, new software, and lowering the price. Nintendo saw the writing on the wall and responded in a decisive manner, turning the 3DS's fortunes around.

hopefully Sony will react in the same way, if the sales trend continues, and it does not perform well in the US, either. The Vita looks like a great piece of hardware, and I would be buying one if I were single. Being married with three kids, I can't justify two portable systems, and I am very happy with my 3DS.

  • Im actually surprised they are keep afloat this well, considering price, consoles and smartphones being more popular.
  • i want one
  • I always thought the Japanese bought the Nintendo handhelds for their portable gaming needs; since when did they need the Sony stuff for that?
  • I want to have money for this, but I just can't support my gaming economy with a PS3 and a Vita.

  • wow, not good. I wonder how its going to sell in the U.S.
