That Other XCOM Game Is Still Coming

2K Games' other XCOM title developed by 2K Marin is still coming, the publisher confirmed.

This morning, 2K announced XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a strategy game developed by Civilization creator Firaxis. The publisher first unveiled the 2K Marin XCOM game, a first-person shooter, in April 2010. The game has since seen its fair share of delays, leading many to believe the title will never ship at this point.

Today's announcement doesn't mean 2K Marin's title is canceled, however. Below is 2K's statement on the matter:

2K Marin’s XCOM and Firaxis’ XCOM: Enemy Unknown are two different games that draw from the classic XCOM universe. Each game offers a unique XCOM experience in different genres, as envisioned by two different studios with unique creative visions. 2K Marin’s XCOM is a tactical squad based shooter, offering boots-on-the-ground action through the experience of an XCOM agent leading  a team into combat against a dangerous, unknown enemy threat. 2K Marin’s XCOM is a character driven experience and offers a look at the origin of the XCOM organization as it faces its first threat from outside our world.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown, currently in development at Firaxis Games, is an action strategy title that will be instantly recognizable to fans of the original XCOM, while offering a ground-breaking gameplay experience for today’s console and PC gamers.  With equal emphasis on deep strategy and intense tactical combat, XCOM: Enemy Unknown puts players in control of the entire XCOM organization, managing resources, improving technologies, and overseeing their combat strategies and individual unit tactics, while battling a terrifying alien invasion around the globe. Released in 1993, the original XCOM is widely regarded as one of the best games ever made and has now been re-imagined by the strategy masterminds at Firaxis Games.

XCOM from 2K Marin is scheduled to ship during Take-Two's 2013 fiscal year, which begins on April 1, 2012 and ends March 31, 2013. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is coming this fall.

  • That's good, I liked the look of that FPS, glad it got pushed up too, because 2K only has Bioshock Infinite this year - more marketing money means it'll get the sales it deserves.
  • Good to hear. My interest was piqued from the last few developer diary entries on 2K Marin's project.

  • I don't think many are interested in it. Nor are many interested in the Syndicate game. Two games that did not need to be turned into FPS style games.
  • Man... this is great, but I REALLY wish Bethesda or someone had done this with Fallout, instead of just making 'Fallout: Oblivion' (aka, Fallout 3). That game was great, but.. it just wasn't Fallout.
  • "best games ever made" for a game that hardly anyone seems to know about.

  • How does this work on OXM they said - 2k Marin is now helping with Bioshock Infinite and the finishing Xcom

  • Will XCOM: Enemy Unknown be coming to consoles? My computers busted, and I'm going through strategy withdrawal :(

  • I WAS hoping for battlefront 3...

Well LucasArts, you have lost my faith. Star Wars Kinect is going to bomb, and the only good game from you lately is SWTOR.

Battlefront 3 will never be, even though millions say it should be. And even though LucasArts knows it's what we want, they just keep screwing us over. Battlfront 3 would make tens of millions, and they still disappoint.

  • Is it just me? I was shocked by this reveal cover. I am a fan of the 93 original XCOM Enemy Unknown. I heard that this was announced back in 2010, but no one ever heard anything about it since, so everyone thought it was an abandoned project, well thank God its not.

  • I've only ever seen Let's Plays of the original XCOMs(GuavaMoment is LPer, if you're curious), and the 2K Marin shooter is more interesting to me, despite the hardcore fans.

  • I know there the other XCOM game.

  • Two XCOM games? So this means I can buy both and see which one takes the cake. Sounds fair.
