[Updated] Rumor: Co-op Multi-Console Epic Mickey 2 To Release Next Year

[Update]

The rumors of Epic Mickey 2 are looking even more credible. Posters on the NeoGAF forums have translated this post by the French website Nintendo Master, which reads (roughly) as this in English:

"Like many other sites, we have just received an invitation from Disney France and Warren Spector to introduce us on March 27 to a new "epic project." It's not hard to make the connection between this wording and the name of a certain gentleman's game, Epic Mickey."

Looks like we can expect news on Epic Mickey 2 in the near future.

[Original Story]

Confirmation of a multi-console sequel to Epic Mickey popped up seemingly by accident in a Disney newsletter.

All of this information comes form an article on StitchKingdom.com, and though they offer links to the newsletter in question, the information about Epic Mickey 2 no longer seems to be present. It may be an issue of information being accidentally placed in the newsletter, and then quickly removed. In any case, here's what the newsletter is supposed to have said.

The newsletter said that Epic Mickey 2 should be releasing Fall 2012, will be multi-console, and feature co-op. The newsletter had the following description of the game:

"Disney Epic Mickey 2 is the latest game in the critically acclaimed Disney Epic Mickey videogame series. In this all-new action-platforming game available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, Mickey embarks on an epic journey and is pulled back into a world filled with Disney’s forgotten characters. Players can choose to play single-player as Mickey or for the first time players can also choose 2-player split screen mode. In the 2 player mode one person can play as Mickey wielding magic paint and paint thinner to dynamically change the world and the second player can play as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit – Walt Disney’s first cartoon star – with the power to fly like a helicopter and use electricity to fight or friend enemies and solve challenges. Team-up and choose your path to save this forgotten world because the choices you make will alter the story and change the end of the game!"

Epic Mickey 2 rumors have been wandering around the internet even before Epic Mickey released. The above images came from a survey asking consumers to pick which boxart they liked the best from a few months ago, but was in no way a true confirmation of the sequel.

Thanks to Brad for the news tip!

  • wow

  • I am eagerly awaiting Epic Mickey 2, which I am sure will release eventually. I'm still gonna play it on my Wii though, even if it does go multiplatform.
  • I'd rather have a Wii U version, come on that would be awesome, the wiimote controls would be an option or they could do something interesting with the Wii U pad...
  • Ooh, neat!

  • The first one was really great from the bits I've played so I'll definitely be looking forward to this installment as well

  • Epic mickey 1 looked intresting enough, but it being on the wii was the main reason i never bothered with it, i hope they make a port to the 360 and ps3 so the better consoles can enjoy this nice little game that warren spector has to offer
  • I wonder if, when designing a game, poor developers have to take into account that if they get a sequel, it'll have to inexplicably be two-player...

  • I actually had to return Epic Mickey because it was basically unplayable on my HD tv. Seriously, it was too dark and no amount of fiddling with either the game's or my TV's brightness could fix it. It was a shame too because I was really liking it. Since this will be on the Wii U it will probably look nice. I'll look forward to seeing more about it.
  • I'm not going to get the sequel if there is one, mostly because I didn't like the first game. but I guess it has it's audience

  • While this isn't true confirmation of a sequel, it's happening, and consumer surveys have broken the news before. Shadow the Hedgehog was leaked this way, and also....something else (it escapes me at the moment). Besides Epic Mickey was a sales success selling over a million units (closer to 2.5 million by now actually). ON THE WII, where third party games notoriously get screwed over by Nintendo's lack of advertising. Not only did Epic Mickey sell strongly, but it had a "long tail" at retail -- Mickey's one of the few brands outside of Mario and Sonic that Nintendo owners will trust apparently. Which is good, because Epic Mickey was awesome. Despite the negative reviews; those journalists suck. Epic Mickey was the best "Rare game" I've played since the N64 days -- it really is uncanny how much it felt like a game made by Nintendo's one-time golden boys. Junction Point did a bang up job creating a wonderful action-adventure, and I'm glad gamers recognized it. I am not looking forward to this though. Junction Point cut staff shortly before EM released, and now they're expected to knock out a sequel for multiple platforms? And the Wii is still there? It's not PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U? It's going to look pretty identical to the first game, won't it? And it's probably going to be even more busted (hey, it may be a great game, but that camera blew). I suppose Disney could've forced Avalanche and Wideload to help out with outsourcing more aggressively, but all signs point to this being a rushed sequel. At least, at the moment. Whenever Disney starts talking it up, I hope to be proven wrong. Disney needs to do more original games with their characters.
  • And of course the game makes its big move to HD gaming.

  • Honestly, I couldn't finish Epic Mickey. I couldn't get past the god-awful camera making the platforming near impossible (for me).

  • I need to pick up a Wii so I can play the first...and Skyward Sword of course.

  • I still gotta play the first one
  • Wait  Epic Mickey was a series?

  • The first one was ultimately kind of bland with the gameplay and I never felt any choices actually mattered or were interesting. I hope they step it up for the sequel and come up with more interesting uses for the paint/thinner mechanic or I know I'm not going to pick it up.

  • I never got the chance to play the first game, since I don't have a Wii, but it looked fun and I would have liked to play it. Hopefully, if this is true, then they'll release the first game as a download or something for 360 and PS3.

  • I hope its true because Epic Mickey is one of the few games I wanted to buy a Wii for. I think I'll wait for the sequel on ps3 now.

  • I really enjoyed Epic Mickey. It was a flawed gem. The fact that it is making it to current gen consoles like the PS3 is perfect for me. I love love love action platformers, and current gen consoles are sorely lacking in action platformers. Sony has been keeping them alive with the Sly Cooper Collection, a ton of amazing Ratchet & Clank games, and the Jak & Daxter collection, but we need more. As long as this isn't a dirty port which looks like an HD Wii game, I'm all over this.
  • I hope its true because I loved epic mickey and would love a sequel.
