The lights are on
A few years ago, I threw away a few bucks on horse armor in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and ended up feeling guilty about it. Imagine how you'd feel if you spent $16,000 on a virtual item? This is exactly what a man in China did to secure a one-of-a-kind sword for the upcoming MMORPG Age of Wulin.
Snail Games, the developer of the game and host of the online auction, also sold a sheath (yes, a SHEATH) for the Hook of Departure for $1,600 and another sheath for the Lordly Spear for $2,500. The sword sale was commemorated with a nice plaque.
I just have to wonder: What if this game ends up sucking? Can he use the sword from the outset, or is it a high level item? Will it always be powerful? We'll find out soon enough, as Snail Games plans to hold the Chinese open beta next spring. An English version is also planned and should begin testing shortly after the Chinese beta kicks off.
For this man's sake, I hope he loves the game, and he and his sword go on to happily slay thousands of dudes.

Some people obviously have way more money then brains. I wish I had that kind of money to waste on a virtual term!
looks pretty interesting actually
How far can you go into a game? "its just a game"
For me, spending that kind of money i would like something tangible that i can hold in my hands. Everybody has their own hobbies or interests. Plenty of people have spent crazy amounts of money on things i think is silly, but if they enjoy it, who am i to judge.
Buying it before the game came out? Well i think that speaks for itself lol.
Wow! It's hard to believe people buy this kind of stuff for that much money. Who pays that much money for a virtual sword? I wouldn't pay even 1/2 of a cent for a virtual sword!
"Your Wulin will have a life of its own......". Interesting.
What is our world coming to? this game does NOT look that great.
Game does look pretty nifty.
Game looks amazing, but there is no way in hell I would pay that much for something that doesn't exist... Can't wait to play the game though.
if you have the money and you can spend it then is ok.
The game actually looks pretty cool, it's like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Bioware's Jade Empire were combined into an MMO form.
That being said, this guy must have done a lot of research on it to warrant spending that kind of cash on a game that isn't even out yet. I myself have thrown my share of cash into certain F2P titles; 10-20 bucks here and there, but 16 grand? It must be one heck of a sword.
So...it's not a game he already owns? But he's already shelled out thousands of dollars? What?
I couldn't ever imagine spending that much money on a game piece. I never spend any additional money on games I buy as is. I bought the game, isn't that enough?
The game looks nice but I would never give that ammount of money for a gaming item, would love to see that guy with his 16000 sword and dying just to see the other player looting his priceless sword XDXDXD
That actually looked really cool. $16k! Sad is all I can say, but hey it's that gamers money and choice.
Now that is dedication....or stupidity. Take your pick. :)
Wow, what an idiot....
