[Update] Even More People Are Playing The Old Republic

Bioware has sent us some updated stats on the success of The Old Republic. We were sent some stats on Friday, but at least one of those numbers has already more than doubled. TOR's title as the fastest growing subscription MMO in history has been firmly cemented.

  • Over 60 million in-game hours — roughly equivalent to watching all six Star Wars movies over 4 million times.
  • Over 850,000 Sith Warriors and over 810,000 Jedi Knights created.
  • Over 260 million quests completed.
  • Over 44 million PvP battles.
  • Over 9 million space combat missions completed.
  • Over 3 billion NPCs killed.

[Original story, posted Friday December 23, 2011] Bioware sent out some interesting statistics today about The Old Republic and the millions who are already playing.

Here are some of the statistics of player activity in easily digestible list form:

  • Logged 28 million in-game hours – roughly equivalent to watching all six Star Wars movies, two million times.
  • Averaged well over five hours a day playing the game.
  • Created more than 3.8 million characters; 510,000 Jedi Knights and 550,000 Sith Warriors.
  • Killed more than 2 billion non-player characters in the eight days since Early Game Access began.

Bioware also said that Star Wars: The Old Republic is already the fastest-growing subscription MMO in history. That's pretty good for a game that only just officially launched on Tuesday. What do you think World of Warcraft fans? Should Blizzard be worried, or can the two games co-existent peacefully in the MMO landscape?

  • I'm glad it's doing well so far.
  • I hope this game is more "social" then what GI leads on. It sounds like it caters more to solo players. I think replay value in MMO's comes from the social aspects of them. I am getting it in a few days so I guess I will find out then.

Edit: Thanks for all the answers guys. Looking forward to picking it up.
  • You may as well make an article saying "The sun is hot".
  • Ruined the lore of KotOR, lied about crucial development, WoW in space, shipping without codes, terrible pvp. www.youtube.com/watch?v=68VfgesWmcI Eat up that terrible writing and gameplay.
  • I'll be the first to say it: the Force is strong with this one...
  • I'm more than certain that both games can exist peacefully. Only thing is that more people think SWTOR is likely to fail before WoW does. Heck, people are saying SWTOR might go F2P in around 2 years. But good to hear it's doing well right now.
  • HA. i wish

  • Never been an MMO fan, but this game definitely seems worth trying.
  • Great Game!! I love every second of it. I think WoW has some serious competition, with the panda expac coming out they will lose even more. I could see them having around the same amount of subscribers at one point.
  • You don't say?

  • Awesome! I'm glad this game is doing well! I hope I can finally pick it up soon.

  • But how many actual subscribers does it have?
  • Guess we won't see a new kotor for a long, LONG time.
  • Wow has finally met it's match.

  • Good for them that its doing well. I'm not a fan of MMOs though

  • I think that World of Warcraft will have some problems if they don't do anything between Cataclysm and Mists of Panderia because it is getting stale very quicly. I think World of Warcraft will be its own worst enemy, unless they do some fun things soon. That being said, Blizzard has absolutely nothing to worry about because Diablo 3 and Titan are coming out. Those games should make them enough money to buy the moon.
  • i dont own the game yet, but i preordered so i was in the early access and it was a TON of fun. been playing the whole thing with one of my friends and we've been loving it. the story is great, and there is no lack of social interaction at all. the only problem ive had with it is finding a bloody healer :P
  • Just goes to show how popular the Star Wars Universe is and always will be. I'm loving my time in The Old Republic. Extremely well done.
  • MAKE ANOTHER KOTOR!!! I say we go to Lucas Art's headquarters and tip over some buses.
  • Honestly, I don't think Blizzard should be worried.  They have a strong, dedicated fan-base, and I don't think that fan-base is going anywhere.  Yes, there have been complaints in recent months, what with the reveal of Mysts of Pandaria and whatnot, but there are always going to be naysayers.  Myself, I have personally jumped ship and am now thoroughly enjoying my time in the Star Wars: The Old Republic.  I don't plan on going back to WoW anytime in the foreseeable future.  But that's just me, and I'm just one user.  I see no reason why the two games can't live together in harmony.  Besides, a little serious competition would be good for Blizzard -- competition keeps companies innovative.
