Square Enix Members Website Hacked

Square Enix has announced that its free Square Enix Members website in North America and Japan has been hacked.

In a statement, the company says that the server in question may have contained some members' personal information, but that it did not contain credit card info. The site is currently down pending investigation and repair.

Here's the full statement:

We have reason to believe that unknown parties may have gained unauthorised access to a particular Square Enix server related to the free Square Enix Members service offered in North America and Japan. In response, Square Enix, Inc. has temporarily suspended operation of the Square Enix Members service starting at 10PM (PST) on December 12, 2011.

We are assessing the full extent of this potential breach to determine what data, if any, was compromised and will provide more details as soon as possible. While some personal information may have been accessed, we can confirm that there is no possibility of any credit card information leak from this incident, since the server in question stores no credit card information.

We estimate that the suspension will continue for a few days until we complete our investigation and counter-measures. We will update you as we learn more.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of the Square Enix Members service. We take data security extremely seriously and we regret any inconvenience this may have caused our customers and fans. We appreciate your patience and support at this time.

  • I see little point in hacking a free site. What's there to prove?
  • Another hacking. It's getting tiring to hear these stories. Either the websites/servers are not well protected, the hackers are just getting more clever, or a combination of both. I really don't like the idea of anyone hacking into a gaming website/server/etc.. It makes me irritated.
  • Is hacking developers and publishers a new fad or something?
  • Hackers are idiots.
  • why dont theses hackers man up and try hacking into the UN Embassy instead of video game companies...punks

  • Hackers would hack a persons refrigerator, if they could. No limit to who/what they want to get their hands on. The virtual blood suckers of the world. They're dieing for some attention every now and then...still as sad as ever.
  • Maybe it's Live Free and Die Hard all over again?

  • Wasn't Square-Enix already hacked once before? I hope those hackers all contract syphilis and it goes undetected for 20 years.

  • I bet they were just trying to figure out what happened to FF vs-XIII.
  • When is it ever going to end? I mean, Sony got hacked and now it's the next big thing to do?

  • Crying for attention, pranking or messing with someone in Square Enix is what I figure.

  • I wanted to say something about how much this irritates me but I couldn't put into words how much it does. It just does.

  • Hacking a free website? Well whats done is done and it's sad that these smaller websites get hacked for almost no reason.

  • Wow and here I love Dues Ex...leave these guys alone, they do good game.

  • How long before the GIO website is hacked for no reason? I couldn't think of an interesting way to get this thought out there aside from simply saying it.

EDIT: After re-reading my comment, it somewhat seems like i'm trying to get people to hack this site. I cannot stress strongly enough that I do not want anyone to hack this site...or any other site that is not a threat to anyone.
  • ya well maybe this is hacker training

  • Raise your hand if the urge to 'Fus Ro Dah' Black Hat Hackers off a very high cliff is rising... *Raises hand*
