The lights are on
Update: Sony's silence on the rumors regarding The Last Guardian creator Fumito Ueda's employment status with developer Team Ico was conspicuous, but now the company has come clean.
Gamasutra reports that it has received an official statement from Sony confirming Ueda's departure from the developer and the project. However, Sony also says that he is finishing his work on the game as a contractor and is "committed to completing" it – confirming the initial rumor.
Last week there was also a report that executive producer Yoshifusa Hayama had left Team Ico.
No official release date has been given for the title.
Update: Last week it was reported that Fumito Ueda, the creator of The Last Guardian, was finishing the game on a freelance capacity and that he had left Sony. Although we're no closer to the truth, Ueda has addressed the situation himself.
Ueda has recently tweeted in Japanese: "Recently, I have been getting a lot of questions…don’t worry, as usual, I’m still working hard on The Last Guardian." It's certainly not as in-depth of an update as we were hoping for, but on the bright side: At least half of the original rumor is true, and Ueda isn't totally abandoning the promising project.
Sony still has not officially commented on Ueda's status.
Original Story: Fumito Ueda, creator of ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and the still-unreleased The Last Guardian, has reportedly left Sony.
According to sources speaking to Eurogamer, Ueda is currently finishing The Last Guardian in a freelance capacity. The unconfirmed report cites Ueda's exit as one of the reasons the game continues to remain unfinished. It says Ueda will begin work on "person projects" once The Last Guardian is complete.
The long-awaited PlayStation 3 exclusive was originally scheduled to ship this holiday, but Sony delayed the title until 2012.
A Sony spokesperson told Game Informer the company does not comment on rumor or speculation.
Please just finish the game already... Hopefully its worth the wait.
What is it with Japanese developers leaving before their game is finished?
This game better be good or there's gonna be a uproar of anger coming these guy's way.
Well, at least its happening, rather than Ueda leaving and never looking back, he's now just a contractor.
This is such a bad sign for a game I was so looking forward too :(
now its gonna come out by 2015
Real shame. Team Ico isn't going to be the same without them and my worries for this game are getting bigger. I just hope the game is near finished so it doesn't suffer much. The best of luck to you Ueda, go make more amazing games, but multiplatform this time. Share your genius.
2012. End of the World. Great.
This game is so canceled.
My interest in this game faded over time, but after playing Shadow of the Colossus again in the HD collection, I WANT THIS NOW!!!!!!!!!
Man... What are they doing over there? Stop that. Go back to the good times. Make another good game, Team Ico.
It would be nice to finally see some gameplay.
yes! finish this game and move on mr.ueda. Really want to play this & Ico & SOTC hd. Hopefully i'll be able to this holiday!
i dont care if he quit.. for me is good.. because if he go by his own will be better.
i hope all his new games come to all consoles..thats my wish..
and obiosly he will not quit his great game the last guardian he quit sony..
I just want the game...
***! I want to get this game so bad but everything doesn't seem to be working so well.
Well you gotta wonder why he left Sony. I mean Sony's pretty much giving him all the funding and time he needs (as evidenced by the long ass development time for this game).
