Future Zeldas Are Sticking To Motion Controls

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine, Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma said that future Zelda games will use motion controls similar to Skyward Sword.

According to Aonuma, the idea of dropping motion controls was considered during the development of Skyward Sword, but clearly that was thrown out. Aonuma said, "I honestly think we cannot go back to button controls now, so I think that these controls will be used in future Zelda titles, too."

I loved Skyward Sword dearly, but I would have swapped motion controls for a traditional controller in a heartbeat. I don't think it would be very hard to go back to buttons at all. In fact, I could be mistaken, but I do believe there were quite a few buttons that were used in Skyward Sword. What do you think?

  • Wait.......Wii U Zelda will not showcase the new controller? Nintendo's biggest seller will not demonstrate the biggest part of the Wii U? Is that what I should take away from this?
  • im gonna buy a Wii just for this game.
  • I really wish they'd give us a choice... id hook up mah gamecube controller f**k up some stalfos ;)
  • I think you might be one of the few people who actually feel this way.
  • Give people the option for either. Problem solved.
  • I'm glad to hear this. Skyward Sword has become my favorite Zelda game because of the motion controls. There is just something about running around as Link and slashing with him. It's epic.

  • I'm ok with buttons or motion control (Skyward Sword's are a blast to use), but... how will that even work with a Wii U game? Are they just not going to use the tablet? That would ruin the point of both the console, and the E3 demo. Are they going to incorporate the tablet AND motion controls? That'll most likely be a messy clusterf***. I only see this ending in problems for Nintendo. But God-speed anyways, you wackos.
  • I loved Skyward Sword, Possibly my Game of The Year(Still Playing Uncharted 3). Was an amazing game, For the most part the motion controls worked well, But there were few times that it became pretty irritating and Didn't work so well. I would love to go back to controller play, But if it sticks to motion controls I'll still play/buy cause of how great of a job they did with Skyward Sword.

  • well good, after using motion plus to play skyward sword, a new zelda game without it would feel like a step back.
  • Motion controls aren't dependable enough for me. When using buttons I can go into any situation with confidence in my controller. With motion controls I worry if it's going to execute what I intend it to.
  • I am very satisfied with Skyward Swords controls and I am glad Nintendo will be continuing to improve upon them in future Zeldas.

  • We could DEFINITELY go back to controllers.

  • Good.

  • While I like the idea of sticking with Skyward Sword's controls, because I absolutely love them, I would also like to see them incorporate the new controller into the next Zelda. But, I'm sure whatever they end up doing, the next entry in the series will be enjoyable as ever.

  • I think I threw up a little.
  • I am fine with the Wii Motion Plus controls with one exception. They should have just used the pointer for aiming, dowsing, and making on-screen selections. It bothers me when I take out my bow or am presented with choices and I cannot simply point to what I want without first pressing down on the d-pad. The sword play could probably use some tweaking too. Overall I'm happy with Skyward Sword, but I honestly think I'd be happier with a regular controller. I've often thought that Nintendo should just go the SEGA route and make great games for other consoles.
  • I can see why they're sticking with motion controls but why don't they give us the option of ether the robotic sword swings like in twilight princess or the skyward sword style.ether way they should use the pointer to aim on the screen!

  • how bout both options?
  • I loved the motion controls for Skyward Sword. In my opinion, they were the best motion controls I have ever seen to date. However, I really prefer the feel of a controller over motion controls. I just have more confidence in using buttons and joysticks over swinging my arms. I love Zelda, so this if far from a deal-breaker for me, but they would need to work out the few kinks left in their motion controls for me to be 100% behind this.

On a similar note, I really appreciated the added depth swinging your sword in a specific manner added to the combat. If they could implement that same system with a controller, I think that would create a more perfect combat system. You already can swing your sword horizontally or vertically and thrust in previous Zeldas, so using that deeper combat with a controller would be no problem.

Overall, I'll leave it to Nintendo. They rarely disappoint in the long-run.
