Rumor: 'Kinect 2' Can Read Lips

Microsoft's next generation of Kinect will be able to read lips, industry sources say.

According to a report from Eurogamer, the Kinect device released for the next Xbox console will offer improved motion sensing and voice recognition, including the ability to lip read, detect emotions such as anger, and determine player direction. One developer source says the next Kinect can even track the pitch and volume of player voices.

The next Kinect won't be connected to the console through USB this time, either. This will allow for more data to be sent to the Xbox, which will result in higher camera resolution and less input lag.

The report says the next Xbox console will come bundled with Kinect camera, though it offered no other details about possible Kinect-less Skus.

  • sounds pretty cool
  • Included is the only way I will get the Kinect.
  • I am interested only if its lagless, and even then I will just want a controller for most games.
  • looks and sounds AMAZING :p

  • Wonder if they can read my lips *mouths "no thanks"*
  • Yay that way they get to force us to pay an extra $100 on the new xbox for the kinect built in feature that i personaly dont want.
  • That sounds cool but I still don't see this as a replacement to a controller

  • "ability to detect emotions" ...did Peter Molyneux have a hand in this?
  • There is NOTHING redeemable about the Kinect. NOTHING!!!!
  • Can they detect that no one even cares about the first one?
  • The Kinect 2 can, and will, detect fear, and strike when players are at peak fear levels. This will be the first step to Microsoft's world domination.
  • "The report says the next Xbox console will come bundled with Kinect camera" ^I'd imagine that the current Kinects will be left in the dust. Couldn't most of these improvements be applied via digital system/peripheral updates?
  • I want to throw up on kudo now...excuse me

  • so not only will ppl be dancing but singing too now  o yay -_-    more ways for (mostly) crummy games to be made

  • Well with all of this commotion im guessing it will revealed at e3 2012and launch winter 2013. I guess they won't spend too much money on it's specs then since they will price it reasonably. If im correct the wii u's graphics should be close to this.

  • Additional input is a good thing for developpers but must not open the door to gimmickery. i hope they do good stuff with this kinect 2 but i fear they wont.

  • Anyone care about Kinect?? I, personally, couldn't care less!
  • But will it be able to tie my shoelaces?!
  • I haven't seen enough of the current Kinect to suggest that a second iteration is even necessary.  At all.

I mean come on, this past E3 had the biggest offering of Kinect games and even those were mediocre at best.  Why make a Kinect 2?

  • I don't want to sound trollish but...when will the gimmicks end?
