Reader Discussion: Does The Kinect Still Matter? Did It Ever Matter?

by Kyle Hilliard on Nov 24, 2011 at 07:00 AM

The Kinect is an amazing piece of technology. It responds to your voice and body movements, and it helps blind people see (sort of).  When it comes to playing games though, the very thing it was designed to do, has anything really blown you away? Has anything you’ve seen made you run out and buy the device? Will the Kinect have longevity as a video game peripheral? Or is it destined for the pile of plastic guitars and drums sitting in your closet next to that thing you bought just to have that random Zelda shooting game?

When the Kinect was first being shown with Dance Central, it was a must buy in my household. My wife was very excited, but I wasn’t sure how much fun I would be able to derive from a device that required full-body movement, something I specifically use video games to avoid. I ended up a convert though, and had a lot of fun with Dance Central and its sequel. The Gunstringer offered some fleeting fun and used the Kinect well, and Fruit Ninja was worth a few wild gesticulations in the name of chopping fruit, but is there anything else? Are you excited about how Kinect is being implemented in titles like Mass Effect 3 and the upcoming Ghost Recon? Or do those just represent additional features that you won’t take advantage of?

Sound off below, and tell us: does the Kinect matter?
