Skyrim Mystery: Why Are Other Countries Built Into The Game?

While most of us have probably been plenty busy just trying to fully explore the massive chunk of land that exists as part of Skyrim itself, a savvy PC gamer has discovered that Bethesda laid the basic foundations for other countries of the continent of Tamriel within Elder Scrolls V.

Over on his Tumblr account, an Elder Scrolls fan used no-clip to travel beyond the normal boundaries of Skyrim's map and was shocked at what he discovered. The scenery and foliage keeps populating far further than you'd expect, and though it eventually stops, the nation of Morrowind's full geography seems to be accounted for, including the island of Vvardenfell and Red Mountain (areas that were the focus of Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind).

If that's not crazy enough, this intrepid virtual explorer also discovered a landmass that looks like the realm of Cyrodiil (the country that Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion took place in).

Speculation has raged over why these approximated versions of other regions of Tamriel exist. One popular (though questionable) theory is that Bethesda put in the basic work of designing the geography of these regions to make it easier to incorporate them as DLC in the future. It's fun to imagine this being the case, but I find it hard to believe that they would include regions that made up whole games in the series as bonus downloadable content in Skyrim.

Other possibilities include that it was just to help make the 3D map more accurate and the world look correct if you looked out from high points in Skyrim, or that Bethesda put it in so that modders hoping to add other regions of Tamriel to the game would have a strong base to build off of. These seem more realistic to me, but with the Thanksgiving holiday in swing, we can't check in with Bethesda itself at the moment.

Check out full pictures and a travelogue of the mysterious new regions of Tamriel on the PPSh-41 Tumblr, and post your own crazy theories in the comments below.

  • Pretty crazy. I really hope modders take advantage of this.
  • my life would officailly end if they added entire other regions as DLC. i would spend the rest of my existance playing Skyrim: with other provinces.
  • I sent this in as a tip yesterday, is there something wrong with the news tip program or did it just get passed over? Anyway, I'm hoping it's for future DLC.
  • Please be DLC. I want to go to Elsweyr or Summerset Isle.
  • If they are going to add two whole countries as "DLC", then their goes another 300 hours of my life -_-
  • who ever did this is to obsessed with elder scrolls
  • Hmm.

  • this encourages my dream of a morrowind hd remake
  • This game is already pretty big and I'm not even 30 hours in, thanks to BF3 which i have 80+ hrs in, but I'm picking up my pace in Skyrim and I'm finding myself fast traveling more than the explorer side of me wants to admit just so I can complete quest faster lol
  • Imagine it. Cyrodil, Skyrim, Morrowind, Summerset Isle, and Hammerfell. Could you imagine if they added every other region in as DLC? Fully alive, each one would be! NPCs, Main Quest, Side quest, story and all! Although such a task, it would seem, would only be capable of being a full game. DO IT.
  • I've noticed that the Stormcloak faction and the Imperial faction seem to be very similar to the radical left and right today in this country.

The Stormcloaks are xenophobic and racist and want to govern themselves.

The Imperials are accepting of other races just as the radical left is, but is authoritarian and has no idea what they are doing.
  • Well they did say that they wanted any DLC for Skyrim to feel substantial...But substantial to the point of getting to explore the entirety of the two previous game's landscapes? I guess we'll just have to wait and hear for official word from Bethesda.
  • I doubt it's as unlikely as you say, I can understand covering your bases though. I'm not saying that it is for future DLC. But as something a large portion of fans have probably discussed and hope for, it's not outside the realm of possibility that they would consider such an expansion. Also, expansions of that size would be massive, close to game size content. Why wouldn't they consider pre-loading the disc with much of the future required content just to decrease the size of the impending download. Like I said, it's not so out there. But at the same time it will be quite a while before we see a DLC of such magnitude, if it is indeed planned.
  • Personally, I think the next Elder Scrolls game will be on the next gen consoles/pcs and you will be able to travel across all of Tamriel. Just a thought. Wouldn't that be amazing, though?! (not that Skyrim isn't)
  • What I Hope Will Happen Is That Eventually Bethesda Will Release A Game Including All The Areas Of Every Elder Scrolls Game. I Highly Doubt It Will Happen, But Hey, A Gamer Can Dream, Right?
  • This is crazy.
  • Morrowwind, Cyrodiil, and the rest for dlc? I'd pay 60 extra bucks for that.
  • that is incredibly awesome.

  • If only you could explore without boundaries...
  • I think DLC would be cool
still in there eh...perhaps the source of the glitches, or at least part of the problem.
I wonder if this is part of the console versions too...MOD TIME!!!
