Reader Discussion: Are You Getting Tired Of HD Remakes?

by Joe Juba on Nov 20, 2011 at 05:41 AM

Remastering classic games in high definition is a great way to relive your favorite titles or, in some cases, experience them for the first time. But is there a point when enough is enough?

I think I've probably reviewed more HD remakes than anyone else in the office, and as I recall, the current trend kicked off with the God of War Collection on PS3. Given the success of that compilation, Sony and other developers went forward with plans for other HD re-releases of games from the last generation. Since then, we've seen Beyond Good & Evil HD, Resident Evil 4 HD, Resident Evil: Code Veronica X HD, The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, and the God of War Origins Collection (and I'm probably missing a few).

It doesn't seem to be slowing down for the future, either. Collections for big-name series like Jak & Daxter, Silent Hill, Zone of the Enders, and Devil May Cry are still on the way. We haven't quite slipped into the territory where publishers are releasing B-List franchises, so it's hard to complain about having the chance to re-play so many awesome games. On the other hand, some gamers may not even have the time given how many great new games are coming out this season.

What do you think? Do you enjoy these collections? What series would you like to see get the HD treatment? Are you even taking these trips down memory lane, or are you focusing on brand-new games? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
