World of Warcraft Turns 7, Celebrates With Commercial

Wednesday, November 23 marks the seven-year anniversary of World of Warcraft's release. To commemorate the occasion, Blizzard is giving players some in-game bonuses, plus the chance to watch a commercial.

A commercial is a pretty lame birthday present (it airs on Sunday during the Chargers-Bears game), but the in-game perks are pretty neat. An email from Blizzard states, "all players who log in between Sunday, November 20 and Saturday, December 3 will receive a Feat of Strength and a celebration package item. When used, the package shoots off fireworks and temporarily grants both a special tabard and a 7% experience point and reputation bonus."

I admire the dedication of gamers who have been with WoW since the beginning, and Blizzard deserves tons of credit for creating and supporting such a massive project. Of course, Blizzard doesn't really need the credit, considering it has, like, billions of dollars. Anyway, happy 7th birthday, WoW!

Update: The commercial has been posted below.

  • Wooh!
  • The longevity of WoW is so impressive. I played it for about four of those seven years, and it was incredible to see it change so frequently and drastically during my time there. Here's to another seven years.

  • I wish I got one when I turned 7.

  • Happy Birthday to one of the most successful games in history.

  • $1500 later....
  • WoW is so addictive. Thank god I quit after playing two days.
  • That's a long time.

  • Those idiots, playing a game that never ends. *goes back to playing Skyrim*
  • I'm not sure why, but I thought it was older than that

  • happy bday. played it for 6 and a half years quitting back in april...fun times...bad times....still a solid game. my hat off to anyone that started in beta way back when and is still playing.

  • And a million cries were heard around the world "Give us our last 7 years back!"

  • Grats to Blizz for keeping this game up for so long and keeping it pretty good. I remember playing during the glory days of pre-bc and I'm sort of sad with the route they have taken over the years, especially with the next expansion. Even though I have quit playing, happy birthday to WoW, one of my favorite games of all time.

  • Dang, 7 years seems so long.

  • This game is very good no matter what the haters say. Although I don't play the game anymore, it was still a great game when I played it.
  • this is the first wow birthday i'm missing in 7 years. the game got pretty stale this expansion. skyrim and bf3 are keeping busy until swtor. even if star wars ends up being more of the same but with better single player my main motivation to play wow is all gone - the friends. they aren't there anymore.

  • Such a success, really impressive.

  • I just can't turn this game back on after playing TOR.  I don't want WoW no more.  Happy B-day anyways,

  • Happy birthday WoW

  • I can't believe I've been ripping on my friend for seven years now.... Despite my lack of interest (or experience) in the game, seven years is a long project to continuously mould and generate new material for. This is one reason why Blizzard is a top-notch company.

  • At some point they will really have to move on. this kinda news is just getting old.
