UPDATE: Minecraft Easter Egg Pops Up In Skyrim

by Phil Kollar on Nov 15, 2011 at 02:05 PM

UPDATE: Just a tiny update here, but Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson has acknowledge the existence of this item and made a fun joke about it on his Twitter account:

"Adding the Toddhowared Pickaxe to Minecraft."

Let's hope that awesome-sounding item actually makes it in!

ORIGINAL STORY: Bethesda's strange legal tangle with Minecraft developer Mojang has been well-documented, but apparently the developer isn't above poking a little fun at themselves related to this situation.

As seen in the screen above (and discovered by Geekology), you can located a "Notched Pickaxe" within the world of Skyrim. This is important both because it has visual similarities to the pickaxe that is key to Minecraft and, of course, because "Notch" is the popular nickname of Minecraft creator Markus Persson.

Of course, in a game as packed full of stuff as Skyrim, it's possible that this is a coincidence or maybe even a quick, clever mod by some snarky fan. I sort of hope it isn't, though!

This isn't the only example of Mojang and Bethesda playing nice with each other. Way back at E3, before these legal troubles started, Notch sat down with Bethesda's Todd Howard for a one-on-one discussion that we filmed.
