PETA Blasts Nintendo For Tanooki Suit

They may be late to the party, but animal activist group PETA is turning its sights to Mario for his raccoon fur-loving ways.

Hot off the heels of Super Mario 3D Land's release in North America, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is blasting Nintendo for its famed plumber donning a raccoon suit. The group released a new Flash parody game for its "Mario Kills Tanooki" campaign called Super Tanooki Skin 2D.

"Tanukis are real-life raccoon dogs who are beaten and, as PETA's undercover exposés show, often skinned alive for their fur," says PETA executive vice president Tracy Reiman. "This winter, everyone can give raccoon dogs and other fabulous animals a 1-Up by keeping our wardrobes fur-free."

The game, which is available to play on PETA's website, puts players in control of a skinned raccoon as they hunt down Mario wearing his tanooki suit.

"Tanooki may be just a "suit" in Mario games, but by wearing the skin of an animal, Mario is sending the message that it's OK to wear fur. We created our game to help inform people that in real life, Mario would be wearing the skin of an animal who was beaten, strangled or electrocuted, and it wouldn't give him any special powers other than the power of self-deception," PETA says.

    *facepalm*
  • They could be doing so many other things.
  • A suit...that's been around...since the early 90's...PETA, meet my favorite four-letter organization, STFU. Membership is free AND comes highly recommended.
  • PETA's always good for a laugh.
  • They're just grasping at straws now.
  • Wouldn't killing Mario be sending the message that it is okay for animals to kill humans, according to PETA'S standards?
  • Dam, Peta is sounding more and more like a pagan cult almost everyday.
  • Lol. They certainly are the logical compass nowadays

EDIT: Dear God the game on their website is disturbing
  • I'm left leaning, but man - PETA just always seems to take everything way to seriously.
  • Oh PETA, youre at least two decades late on hating mario's racoon suit, also do you hunt down and murder mario in this flash game? because it would seem a tad ironic that PETA's okay with Italian plumbers being murdered by racoons but not an italian plumber wearing a racoon suit
  • Just pointing out that we wouldn't be here if humans didn't use animal fur to survive in ancient times. I'm totally for the ethical treatment of animals but it is not okay to value the life of animals over people. I would also say that while animals make great pets, and can bring happiness to your life, a lot of animals are considered resources, or as helpful tools.
  • Just no. I love animals, but this is too far. Doesn't he use a leaf or something to transform? It's not like he has to jump on a raccoon and maul it to get the power-up. What's next? They start a protect Bowser campaign because he's technically a turtle? Seriously, PETA, persecute some abusers, not a kid's character. God knows the animals being abused need a voice.
  • Wow, simply wow

  • This sounds like something you would hear on the radio in GTA.

  • All this is going to do is make gamers either laugh (which I'm doing right now) or rage.
  • What, no flaming for the frog suit. Aww, man.
  • Lets hope they've never played the original Spyro trilogy. Burning sheep to gain extra lives and all that. xD
  • time for a new baby seal fur coat! JK.
  • when you beat the disturbing blood soaked flash game the screen says F*** you mario, yeah, that's nice PETA
  • so all we have to do to get mario's Tanooki suit is to beat, strangle or electrocute a raccoon dog?
