Reader Discussion: Game Of The Year 2011 Predictions

by Phil Kollar on Nov 11, 2011 at 03:15 PM

With many of the major releases for 2011 finally out, we're very close to that fun time of the year when we start having meetings around the Game Informer office to come up with our picks for Game of the Year. Obviously some major releases aren't quite here (Skyward Sword, Assassin's Creed Revelations, and Old Republic, for example), but a lot of big contenders have arrived (such as Batman: Arkham City, Skyrim, Portal 2, and more).

Looking at what's come already and ahead to what's left, where do you think Game of the Year honors are going to fall?

If I had to pick right this moment, I think I would be torn between Skyrim and Skyward Sword for my personal game of the year. The former has me fully addicted, but I still need to spend a lot more time with it to see where the main quest and various side activities lead before I have my final feelings. The latter is the first game I've ever given a 10 at Game Informer and almost single-handedly proves the worth of the Wii in my opinion. Both seem like no-brainer GOTY candidates, which makes it really difficult when they're going up against each other.

Then again, looking back earlier in the year, I also adored Portal 2 for its brilliant level design and clever writing. Maybe that's worth of a nod? And Batman: Arkham City is easily the most satisfying superhero game I've ever played, as well as one of the most densely content-packed open-worlds ever put into a game. That could end up taking top honors as well.

And for what's yet to come, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood surprised me last year and ended up taking home our readers' choice for Game of the Year. It's totally possible that Revelations will pull me in just as much. Or perhaps the hundreds of thousands of hours I'm likely to sink into Star Wars: The Old Republic over the next few years will make that an obvious choice.

What do you think? Leave a comment with your predictions for what will win big as we close out 2011, and stay tuned to GI in the coming weeks for more Game of the Year talk as well as voting for readers' choice picks.
