New Zelda 3DS In The Works, Majora’s Mask Remake A Possibility

In an interview with Portugese website MyGames, famed Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma confirmed the team is working on a new Zelda 3DS title that won't be a sequel to the DS games.

“We are already preparing a new game, a game in the series for the Nintendo 3DS, but don’t think that it is a direct sequel to the Zelda titles released on DS," he said. "We are talking about a new game, but it takes much of what has been done on previous handhelds.”

Aonuma was later asked about a possible Majora’s Mask remake for 3DS after the commercial success the Ocarina of Time remake saw on the handheld earlier this year.

“It’s something I’m asked about often and I assure you that it is something I’ve spoken to Miyamoto about. But recently we released The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D as a remake. We are considering the idea, but it didn’t seem right to launch a remake one after another, so the next Zelda game on 3DS will be original.”

Aonuma dropped some hints about a new Zelda 3DS title in our October issue, saying "It will be a game in which having 3D will mean something."

  • Since I really enjoyed Majora's Mask and Ocarina of Time was one of the mainreasons to get a 3DS, I would be thrilled to see a remake of Majora's Mask.
  • This and Phil's 10/10 for SS are the best things I've heard all day. Hopefully we can get a sneak peak at E3 and have an early to summer release in 2013, there's definitely enough coming out to hold me over till then.
  • I think that will be a great thing, a new Zelda title for the 3DS will be good. I personally loved the unique Zelda titles that were on the GBA. such as the Minish Cap. Uniqueness is something that people like to see

  • please god let it have traditional controls and not the terrible stylus controls....i had to skip the ds zeldas cause i hate stylus controls on zelda.
  • I know that any Zelda game is great, but most of the 3DS's good games are ports. Can we get some new (and good) IP's in here?
  • I think it's to little to late for the 3DS.
  • Sounds great! I've loved all the handheld Zeldas and I can't wait to see what they come up with this time.

  • As long as it has normal controls. I could not get through Phantom Hourglass at all....it just felt too gimmicky.
  • Shocking, I mean shocking.  As shocking as a slap upside the head (of cold rain).

Anyway, as much as I "love" Spirit Tracks, I can only hope this one doesn't take too many cues from its immediate predecessors.

  • Oh god it better be a MM remake or I will burn down Nintendo's HQ!!!
  • that be great i never got to beat the n64 one ...so i might buy it it...tho idk about getting a 3ds till kingdom hearts DDD
  • When are they going to make an Epona racing game? or maybe have Epona be an unlockable horse in Barbie's Horse Racing? This needs to be addressed.
  • I'd take a Majora's Mask remake just to wait for the next 3DS Zelda, since Nintendo hired people to remake Oot it shouldn't drive any development time away from Nintendo's studios.
  • Oh Nintendo...so predictable.
  • Cool. I just wish these were released for the Wii, instead of just the 3DS :/

Also kinda proud that the news comes from MyGames, despite not checking it cause I find it meh, being a portuguese website and all.

  • SCORE! I love the decision to not release two remakes one after another. Kudos on that Nintendo. Capcom could take a lesson from you.
  • Sounds great. Glad to hear that they have another Zelda in makings. That's Skyward coming soon, a possible Majora's mask someday, a HD Zelda on Wii-u (yes I know that was a tech demo but they have to do one sometime). And now a new Zelda game entirely on 3DS. It's good to be Link.

  • I am really happy to hear that they are still open to remaking MM. The possibility of an original Zelda for the 3DS sounds good, hopefully its not another gimmicky Bow & Arrow only game....

  • I have played (but not beaten) every Zelda game ever released, other than the horrible Phillips CD-i *** which I won't even bother counting. My personal favorite in the entire series (probably no surprise here) has to be Ocarina of Time. In fact, when thinking upon my all time favorite series, not only does Nintendo have that particular niche covered, but curiously they are all new transitions for the franchise. Kinda.

Ocarina of Time (N64). Metroid: Prime (GCN). Resident Evil 4 (GCN). Super Mario 64 (N64). Grand Theft Auto....... San Andreas (PS2. Yes! This one! Not GTA III. I missed out on III & Vice City, but drastic enhancements such as a much larger game world, and things like being able to improve stats and actually swim in water make this MY definitive favorite in THIS series, despite further improvements in made in IV).

Back on track, as far as Zelda handheld titles, here's my top 5:

    1. Link's Awakening DX (GB)

    2. The Minish Cap (GBA)

    3. Phantom Hourglass (DS)

    4. Oracle of Seasons (GBC)

    5. Oracle of Ages (GBC)

I went back and forth between the top three, randomly ordering them for awhile, before settling on this final order. Some things must be taken into account, such as childhood nostalgia, over more interesting gameplay mechanics. Also, the new Ocarina of Time remake for 3DS was left off so as not to be redundant. I wanted to show some love to all the games I could.

  • "It will be a game in which having 3D will mean something." That sounds epic, the way he put it.
