Report: Sony First-Party PS4 Games Starting & Next Xbox In 2013

Both Microsoft and Sony still believe that their respective consoles have plenty of life left in them, but that doesn't mean they aren't actively planning for the future.

Develop has a report from a source that says that work on "several" PS4 projects has begun at unspecified Sony first-party studios. These aren't games yet, per se, because their concepts haven't been green-lit  for full production. Particularly because the PS4's tech specs, etc. haven't been decided yet.

Develop has also heard from various sources that Microsoft plans to bring out the Xbox 360's successor, the so-called Xbox Next, in late 2013. The system would be fully debuted at the E3 convention that same year.

From everything we've heard on our end, these timetables seem very reasonable.

  • Thats right on, just bought a Ps3 not long ago at all. If the Ps4 ends up comin out in late 2012 I will have to wait at least a year in a half to be able to afford it(probably will anyhow) Whats it goin be this time, I wonder, 1,000?!
  • that seems reasonable. there's still plenty of life in current gen consoles, but its not unreasonable to start preparing for the future. a 2013 xbox release would be what, 8 years into the current system's life cycle? they could still support it for another year or so while they transition to next gen.

Also, if this is true, then WiiU better come out swinging, because if it only has a year before the new xbox, it can't afford a 3DS launch where it takes about 8 months to give people what they want.

  • just more speculation

  • perfect that gives me 2 years with PS3 and SKYRIM

  • perfect timing i think

  • There really isn't any need for a new console yet, current consoles can already do so much.  But if there are new ones on the way I will inevitably get them...sigh.

  • Great to know 3 years in advance! Time to start saving.

  • Late 2013 seems ok to me. Just nothing before that. I still like my consoles now and am not ready for a new one yet.

  • I'll still be playing my 360 in 2014.

  • To be honest, I expect one of them to rip off Onlive.

  • Think I might just stick to the PC for a while before I commit to another console.

  • Eh, still a while away anyways. I'll be waiting to see what both companies have to offer when that time comes.

  • I can't afford a new system!!! :(

  • Like nobody new their was a New Xbox and PlayStation coming.

  • xbox 720?  Gotta have a dumber name than "360".

  • WHYYYY?! it's only been it's only been about 10 years since the last console came out, and it's not like they have reached the full potential for the 360 yet! gah, the only reason this excites me is the fact that soon PS3 will be down in price and I can actually go an get one! lol. still, give the 360 5 more years... maybe 10 then release the new console.... or at least pull a sony and create games for the 360 and Xbox Next.... okay you could come up with a better name? okay now I'm just rambling....

  • I am getting a Wii-U and waiting for a year or so before getting one of new systems in 2014/2015. Things are never that spectacular to start out with because developers need time to learn the new systems. Look at video's for launch titles of the 360 from 6 years ago. They look like slightly more polished Xbox/PS2 games and the same thing is bound to happen. I think we can already see what the next gen is going to look like. Good Samaritan demo, Arma 3 perhaps. Next gen is going to be about built functionality and not a simple hardware upgrade, which imo, developers are starting to see diminishing returns in building out games with super high fidelity graphics.

MS will force Kinect on everyone and build it right in the system and they will also have connectivity with their windows phones, maybe even a package deal that comes with one.

Sony, well they could be the more affordable, basic option this next gen, a HW upgrade in a box, which might get my attention if they keep the price in check.

  • expected, but still, i don't think i can afford it...

  • Hopefully, the PS4 will come out in 2014.

  • That's great news because i have alot of time to maybe get both on release day. XD
