EEDAR Survey Ranks Most Influential Game Review Outlets

Video game reviews are meant to give gamers an idea of whether or not they'll want to play a game, but how often do they actually influence purchases? Today EEDAR published the results of a survey which aims to answer that question.

EEDAR asked 3,500 gamers to rank how much the reviews of their favorite game media outlet influence them when purchasing a game (it's worth noting that to be included in the survey, respondents had to own either a PS3 or Xbox 360 -- sorry, Wii owners). These outlets were rated on a five-point scale, with one being "no influence," and five being "very influential." Most outlets ended up smack dab in the middle. Here are the major findings, via a handy infographic from EEDAR.

  • Wow, this is actually a really interesting infographic. Gamespot, IGN, Game Informer, and Gametrailers really cleaned up. Congrats, guys!

  • Nice write up, Hangtime Marchiafava. The chart at the bottom is the one I'm most interested in. Apparently there are a lot of PC gamers in Alaska.
  • A self congratulatory post I see...very nice...Cool stuff though the info on income levels was sort of eye popping. I was surprised by how far in depth the survey went.

  • GI FTW!

  • This just proves that people who make more money know nothing. LOL
  • Aww yeah, nice info Hangtime.

  • I'm from North Dakota. On the map it says G4TV was the most influential. Just want to note, it would probably be GI but we have the illiterate people out in the boonies who can't read and got that new fangled internets.

Also, pretty sure GI isn't normally stocked on store shelves.

  • Game Informer - Very Influential

  • I use reviews just to give me a general understanding as to what I should expect, but I don't base my purchases usually off them. They are great tools and guidelines, but if something interests me, chances are I will buy it no matter what the score is.

Personally, I want to start seeing BlisteredThumbs the next time there is a list like this out. Those guys are getting better every time I see them.

Also, I usually stick to this site, G4TV, and EscapistMagazine. This is by far my favorite tough. I like the staff on this site a hell of a lot better than most other gaming sites.
  • Reviews have some impact on my purchasing decisions but they are rarely the deciding factor. I find user reviews to be far more valuable, as you get a far more varied set of reactions and can more accurately judge different aspects of a game from multiple viewpoints before deciding to spend your money. If I went strictly from GI's review, I would never have bought Resistance 3 based on the score you gave it- a 7. However, I bought it based on reading about it from other sources and so far it's one of my favorite games of the year and my personal favorite in that series. I guess what I'm trying to say is that yes, reviews can be helpful but it's important to get a wide range of opinions before you drop money on a new game.
  • Wow, Gamespot is more influential than I thought. It's funny to me that ONE state picked Game Pro. I'm not trying to make fun of Game Pro, it's just funny, that's all.
  • INTERESTING!!! AT LEAST THIS SHOWS US THAT WE RATHER KNOW INFORMATION ABOUT A GAME BEFORE BUYING IT. IT WILL SUCKS BUYING IT AND ENDED UP SUCKIN. IM SURPRISED A LOT OF PEOPLE GOES TO GAMESPOT. I JUST GO HERE GAMEINFORMER THEN IGN AND ILL FINISH IT OFF WITH GAMESPOT THEN ILL COMPARE THE REVIEWS BEFORE BUYING IT. THANKS FOR THIS INFO IT HELPS
  • what about metacritic? i know they dont review but by having all the reviews in one place that helps and you can read many different opinions very quickly.
  • Mod
Reviews influence games I'm on the fence about that no friends are playing. Generally if I'm not interested in a game, high praise from friends can convince me to purchase. But if no one I know is playing it I have to take the word of the reviewer. I give credit to Reiner, he's convinced me to purchase both Singularity and Dead Island. I know there's more but off the top of my head there's those two.
  • I allways get my reviews from Entertainment Weekly
  • Proud to live in a GI state! Congrats!

  • I'm pondering the
  • How is "Xbox 360 Achievements" behind Gamespot and IGN in terms of web? WTF? No surprise that Gamespot is winning though. Google any video game and, more often than not, the Gamespot entry is the no.1 search response. Personally, I haven't been to Gamespot since they fired (now Giantbomb's) Jeff Gerstmann over his Kane & Lynch review, but mostly I just don't like the layout of their site. My personal favorites are: -Giantbomb (with so much video coverage, you can just make up your own mind. Which is what is important. Reviewers ignore non-mainstream games too often, and that's how games like Deadly Premonition and Nier - MEMORABLE games, not annualized, derivative, disposable military shooters - get overlooked) -GameInformer here. Again, the video coverage is great, and they focus more on news since, I guess, they save the reviews for the physical mag -Siliconera. They focus on Japanese devs a lot, and get a lot of interviews and stuff that is very insightful. I seem to hate IGN more and more by the day. The amount of ads on the site is offensive - I especially hate the ones at the top that "push" the whole page down to reveal a video. Gametrailers too has far too many ads. And the editors on-hand for both are joyless and ignorant; they clearly only give a sh** about games Gamestop advertises. All they play and talk about are the same Call of Dutys, Assassin Creeds, Mass Effects and NOTHING ELSE that millions of other places talk about also. It's horrible.
  • Funny, GI is more influential than IGN in California, where IGN is based...but I can't trust reviews from a single outlet, I have to look at Metacritic for a good overall rating.  I trust GI reviews more than any other outlet, but I still don't solely base buying a game on them.

  • LOOK AT YOU GI, LOOKING ALL INFLUENTIAL AND STUFF!!
