The lights are on
According to a new report from research group NPD, 91 percent (approximately 64 million) of kids ages 2-17 are gaming in the U.S., representing a nine point increase since 2009.
NPD says that while they've seen increases among all age groups, the fastest growth areas are ages 2-5, which has seen a 17 point increase since 2009. Females and teens ages 15-17 are also driving this growth.
“Year-to-date through August 2011, kids comprised 44 percent of new physical software dollar sales, representing a vitally important consumer segment for the games industry,” said Anita Frazier, an analyst for NPD. “Knowing how kids are spending their gaming time and dollars in both traditional and non-traditional outlets is key to staying relevant to this highly engaged audience.”
Unsurprisingly, the platforms seeing the most growth with kids are mobile devices and computers. Since 2009, mobile gaming has jumped from 8 percent to 38 percent while traditional portable gaming devices, such as the Nintendo DS and PSP, increased from 38 to 45 percent.
The data was collected through an online survey in August that included approximately 4,136 individuals ages 2 -17.
thats cool i mean its a fun hobby and a great money maker but also a wallet breaker so lets hope that 91 percent is smart with there money and that 9 percent can go and waste there time doing nothing i mean even sports players probably play at least there sport as there team, if i were them i'd be pretty *** content playing as myself, but anyway thats a lot of america.
I think we need to evaluate what they consider gamers. For example, does this include anti-games such as Farmville? How much must a person play in order to be considered a gamer?
I'm part of that!
That's nothing! I had my son playing games while he was still in embryo form.
Seriously though, how is a 2 year old filling out an online survey?
That's because kids are cool.
Keep in mind 95% of kids have smartphones
Wow even 2 year olds are gaming.
Ya the U.S. has a bright future.
If you count Just Dance as "games"
Im not surprised 91% of kids in the US mess around with video games. Although I do feel sort of sorry for the 9% that dont. Do they live up in the hills? Eat racoon? And play a banjo in the evenings?
Cool, just 9% to go for the first stage of gamers-world-domination.
I'll go ahead and be bitter by saying that these "games" that many of them play are not video games...Pop-A-Zit and Words with Friends...and then there's the people who are "gamers" because they play Madden every spare moment of the day...
i am not shocked that kids as young as two years old are playing video games. Exposure to things like the Wii, Nintendo DS, and Xbox is key to this growth in gaming. I bet most people think this is a bad thing, but sometimes you just can't help it.
Good! Gaming can be good for kids in moderation. Playing games like Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed actually helped me have a deeper appreciation, knowledge, and yearning for our world's history. I've also learned how to think with portals... :P
Or maybe the same kids who use the internet also play games? I bet there is a huge chunk of these demographics that aren't represented because they don't use the internet much, or if they do it is while being monitored by their parents. When I was 2 I would never have been able to fill out a survey. Pretty sure I couldn't even read until like age 5 or 6.
