The lights are on
UPDATE: Early details on Mass Effect 3's newly announced multiplayer mode have started to slip out via the developer's forums.
According to the forum post, the multiplayer mode will be cooperative with up to four players. Players will be able to "choose from a variety of classes and races," and success in the co-op mode will affect the "Galactic Readiness" system in the solo game. It's unclear how that will influence your game overall, but knowing BioWare and the Mass Effect series, it could be a primary factor in deciding how the universe looks when you finish Mass Effect 3.
ORIGINAL STORY: Commander Shepard has never been the go-it-alone type, but the hero will have more backup than usual in Mass Effect 3. Confirming longstanding rumors, BioWare has revealed that the third installment of the series will feature an online multiplayer component.
Details on Mass Effect 3's multiplayer functionality will be appearing in the November issue of Australian mag PC Powerplay. Details are scarce at this point, but Eurogamer is reporting that multiplayer is separate from the main campaign and will include some form of competitive element.
We'll have more information on Mass Effect 3's multiplayer soon, so stay tuned.

I don't think I have much interest in competitive multiplayer in ME.
I just want a friend or two to be able to play the campaign with me as my squad mates.
This could turn out to be great, so many people are already upset about nothing. Give it time before you decide its "half-ass" or "unnecessary". Too many negative Nancys here.
You guys should see the blowup at BSN.
Virtually every game these days does competitive multiplayer. I would much prefer to see players take on cooperative missions as Shepard and company.
Well it SOUNDS cool, but I'll have to play the game before any final decision
I don't know weather to be happy or sad, on one hand I bet it will be fun and awesome and will probably be a bit more stratigic than a CoD deathmatch, but at the same time I don't want it taking away from the impact of the main story.
neh I wont be buying it for the MP, but nice to see them care ;)
Yea.... no this is just dumb. It'll be tacky and a quick add on. Give it its own disc, that's not even in a disc holder and just freely tumbling around inside the case because no one cares about this. We want a great S.P and hopefully with them goofing off and putting in this we still do.
Oh great every other game out there has it so let's throw one in to our game by tacking on some bulls%&t mode that nobody will care about.
I hope this isn't just some half a$$ed add on like the Dead Space 2 mp was. As long as the multiplayer is thought out and well implemented I don't mind.
Oh sweet jesus, why did this need implementing? Stop messing around Bioware and focus on the single player. Not every game needs multiplayer ya know?
I was skeptical about assassin's creed's multiplayer but that turned out great. I'll hold , my judgement until I hear some more details.
Ugh...if it's good can it be awesome?! Yes. Would I prefer if they had spent the time they spent on the multiplayer on the campaign? GOD YES!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. WHY!!! Why must every great franchise waste great resources on MP when they could be spending the time expanding or improving the single player experience. (Assassins Creed: Brotherhood comes to mind. Great game that could have been better.) There is absolutely no reason for this. It is a single player franchise and should stay that way. If I want to play a MP game, I have Dead Island, GOW3, and BF3!!!
Mass Effect 2 had a good cover mechanic, so why not have multi-player?
