The lights are on
UPDATE: Early details on Mass Effect 3's newly announced multiplayer mode have started to slip out via the developer's forums.
According to the forum post, the multiplayer mode will be cooperative with up to four players. Players will be able to "choose from a variety of classes and races," and success in the co-op mode will affect the "Galactic Readiness" system in the solo game. It's unclear how that will influence your game overall, but knowing BioWare and the Mass Effect series, it could be a primary factor in deciding how the universe looks when you finish Mass Effect 3.
ORIGINAL STORY: Commander Shepard has never been the go-it-alone type, but the hero will have more backup than usual in Mass Effect 3. Confirming longstanding rumors, BioWare has revealed that the third installment of the series will feature an online multiplayer component.
Details on Mass Effect 3's multiplayer functionality will be appearing in the November issue of Australian mag PC Powerplay. Details are scarce at this point, but Eurogamer is reporting that multiplayer is separate from the main campaign and will include some form of competitive element.
We'll have more information on Mass Effect 3's multiplayer soon, so stay tuned.

It'd be great if it was something unexpected, like ship to ship combat like Star Control
This...I don't know how I feel about this...
I really don't see how the campaign will be affected by this, so what's the big deal?
Oh thats great....now one of my favorite series has become like every other game. Bioware is lucky that Mass Effect 1 and 2 are my favorite games of all time. Though i love them this is disappointing to hear.
I don't know why they would do this, they're Metacritic scores are going to suffer because reviewers will be forced to include the MP component as something they have to grade. And no I don't care about Metacritic, but shareholders do.
I'm excited, I want to know more. :)
competitive is stupid. cooperative mp is the only thing that would work in the ME universe. CAuse if everyone is like shepard, shepard is no longer special
i have no problem with this lol
Um...why? This game doesn't need it.
And that is one of the things i liked in mass effect 2, there is no multi-player, why all this "Obsession" about multi-player mode, it's like "every shooter-game MUST be supported with multi-player" even if the game itself doesn't fit with that, mass effect is a great game as it's and doesn't need to be a multi-player game, developers should think to put more great and original ideas.
Sweet. If Bioware can make a really great Campaign as well as make a great multiplayer, then more power to them! Just make it great! (not that it won't be but, just saying)
That will be quite interesting not being able to control your team and them actually having minds of their own. Can't wait!
I hope it's like a horde mode kind of thing. that would be cool. but want co-op, not competitive gameplay. maybe it will be like portal 2's co-op mode?
What The Barnacle?!?!
Well, now we know why the game was delayed until March 2012...I just hope that any multiplayer that's included is of good quality, and more importantly, that the quality of the single player story does not suffer.
I don't want multiplayer, the game doesn't need multiplayer. This game is all about each player's Shepard and how they shape the story. This is as personal as games can get. I don't want other players in my story.
Definitely in this for the singleplayer but with BioWare at the helm I have a feeling that this multiplayer could be really interesting. Also stop complaining about the multiplayer, if you don't like the concept then don't play the part
