The lights are on
UPDATE: Early details on Mass Effect 3's newly announced multiplayer mode have started to slip out via the developer's forums.
According to the forum post, the multiplayer mode will be cooperative with up to four players. Players will be able to "choose from a variety of classes and races," and success in the co-op mode will affect the "Galactic Readiness" system in the solo game. It's unclear how that will influence your game overall, but knowing BioWare and the Mass Effect series, it could be a primary factor in deciding how the universe looks when you finish Mass Effect 3.
ORIGINAL STORY: Commander Shepard has never been the go-it-alone type, but the hero will have more backup than usual in Mass Effect 3. Confirming longstanding rumors, BioWare has revealed that the third installment of the series will feature an online multiplayer component.
Details on Mass Effect 3's multiplayer functionality will be appearing in the November issue of Australian mag PC Powerplay. Details are scarce at this point, but Eurogamer is reporting that multiplayer is separate from the main campaign and will include some form of competitive element.
We'll have more information on Mass Effect 3's multiplayer soon, so stay tuned.

Well shoot, that sounds really, really stupid. The games are amazing as a single player experience simply because of the amount of choice you have in the story and making it all your own. A game like that does not need multiplayer! Why do people keep asking for multiplayer in games that don't need them? Well, whatever. Just as long as Bethesda doesn't announce a tacked-on multiplayer mode for Skyrim I'll be okay.
I've got mixed feelings about this really. On the one hand, the fact that they said a competitive element could mean a co-op mode where each player gets a grade on their performance or something along those lines, which would be a pretty good idea. On the other hand the fact that its going to be seperate from the main campaign could mean that co-op ends up beaing a few lacklustre missions, or a cookie cutter competitive mp, with the usual deathmatch, capture the flag etc.
very interesting I knew I put this in my pre-order list for something
all im seeing is the potential for bit MORE replay value in a game i already planned to play multiple times... as im sure a lot of people will. Even if it is shoddy, the main point i see people bring up in the "multiplayer in single player games" debate is that it "detracts from the single player experience". Personally, from what ive seen in previews on this site and others, that doesnt seem to be the case. They just now announced MP. and the SP was already looking amazing. Cry and moan all you want but save your judgement for when the game comes out.
this reminds me of when they announced assassins creed multiplayer. it does sound somewhat stupid, but at the same time its not like its taking anything away fron the singleplayer game. dont like it? just play the singleplayer then.
Curious to see how this will turn out. Considering the single player focus of the last two games, it seems like this is more of an afterthought, but I will have to see more before judgement is passed. This will either be a great addition or neglected feature.
Competitive MP my foot... I'll eat my hat if actual player versus player modes are present and competent. The game is fantastic at what it does, but I see no way for that to translate into a meaningful competitive scenario - as much as I would like for it to.
It's what the cool kids do now-a-days, right?!?
If its co-op, then I don't want it. Mass Effect is MY story and it's one of the few games I want to play by myself. I don't need my friends screwing with my story.
If its traditional multiplayer, I don't care for it. I have Halo and Gears of War for that.
All I can say is that this has EA written all over it, and if the single player campaign suffers because resources were pumped into this multiayer feature, I will never forgive them for it.
as long as single player is their first priority (or they leave the multiplayer to another developer), I don't mind this.
AH..multiplayer...glad Mass Effect has become this....not really..
NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY WHY!!!>>>>
There's a little bit of multiplayer in my Mass Effect?
Someone should probably take that out...
