UPDATE: Multiplayer Confirmed In Mass Effect 3

UPDATE: Early details on Mass Effect 3's newly announced multiplayer mode have started to slip out via the developer's forums.

According to the forum post, the multiplayer mode will be cooperative with up to four players. Players will be able to "choose from a variety of classes and races," and success in the co-op mode will affect the "Galactic Readiness" system in the solo game. It's unclear how that will influence your game overall, but knowing BioWare and the Mass Effect series, it could be a primary factor in deciding how the universe looks when you finish Mass Effect 3.

ORIGINAL STORY: Commander Shepard has never been the go-it-alone type, but the hero will have more backup than usual in Mass Effect 3. Confirming longstanding rumors, BioWare has revealed that the third installment of the series will feature an online multiplayer component.

Details on Mass Effect 3's multiplayer functionality will be appearing in the November issue of Australian mag PC Powerplay. Details are scarce at this point, but Eurogamer is reporting that multiplayer is separate from the main campaign and will include some form of competitive element.

We'll have more information on Mass Effect 3's multiplayer soon, so stay tuned.

  • first, and this sounds cool
  • Oh God, no. Just because it's mandatory for every shooter to have doesn't mean you do, Mass Effect! I see no way whatsoever that this could BENEFIT the game, it's clearly just a "hurr, 2011, gotsta have mp" thing. Also, I'd bet anything it's the publisher, NOT the developers, that are making this decision. Stupid people.. grumble grumble... you'll get maybe five more sales with this anyway...
  • Ugh... what is with the obsession to tack on multiplayer with every game nowadays? Can't a game just be left alone as a single-player experience?
  • Curious to see how this will turn out. Considering the single player focus of the last two games, it seems like this is more of an afterthought, but I will have to see more before judgement is passed. This will either be a great addition or neglected feature.
  • *groan* More tacked on, unnecessary multi-player, a la Dead Space 2...
  • This could be great but it could also crash and burn. I trust BioWare with the product though and fingers crossed for a clash of epic sci-fi action. I almost wish that the game would feature a co-op story mode rather than competitive multiplayer.

  • Noooooooo!!!!
  • Competitive multiplayer? For a Mass Effect game? As long as they don't screw around with the main story...I could care less for this feature(co-op or MP). The SP is what I'm interested in playing for this game.

EDIT: Seems like it's going to just be a co-op mode, and it might somehow affect how the story progresses in some way. That brings me a little bit of relief.
  • This is just stupid, why would they do this, if it is coop fine but why would they ever do competitive WHY? dont make this like DA2 bioware! Also this will interfere with production time, look what happened to bioshock 2 when they added multiplayer, this could go one of two ways, it could be amazing or it could be total garbage and make the sp worse(it will probably be worse because of this either way). Lastly I think I have a website which is very appropriate for this announcement

  • No. NO. NONONO. Why, Bioware, why? I mean, just why. Mass Effect is a GREAT single player game. But maybe they can pull it off. Just maybe.
  • It sounds like coop. But I'm sure many gamers won't bother to read what the magazine cover says.
  • As long as the single player content goes unchanged and the production time for multiplayer doesnt interfere with development, i am onboard.
  • I hope it's co-op.  I feel like even if they made a solid competitive multiplayer suite, they won't have a huge community for it.  People love ME for the campaign (and co-op could be great fun), but if they want to go online, I can't imagine it being a AAA online mode.  They'll go elsewhere for third person shooter action.  I hope its not just a tacked on battle mode.

  • It's a separate mode from the main game? I hate half-a$5ed co-op experiences like that. Give me full on co-op or don't even bother.

  • this is dumb. there's no need for a multiplayer element in a game like this
  • Why!!!!???? A game like this doesn't need MP just look how DS2 MP is. The SP is still awesome and it didn't needed a MP yet they put it anyway. They could have put in Co-Op i wouldn't mind but now.........
  • Mod
I usually like the option, but in a game as huge as Mass Effect, that development time could be better spent on the campaign.
  • It's going to be interesting to see how this works out.

  • I don't understand why people are so angry about this, if you don't like it THEN DON'T BUY THE GAME OR JUST PLAY SINGLEPLAYER! Where in the terms of service for any videogame say that if a game includes multiplayer, then you are required to play it?
  • I really have faith that Bioware will not screw this up and bridge the gap to the next step in the ME frachise's evolution. This is going to be AWESOME!
